Our Lady of Chartres

The cathedral of the veil of the Virgin · Chartres (France)

The Gothic Cathedral of Chartres, one of the most beautiful in France, holds the Sancta Camisa - venerated as the veil of the Virgin - and a Black Virgin, in one of the great medieval Marian shrines of Europe.

Place: Chartres, Eure-et-Loir (Francia)
Sanctuary: Cathedral of Notre-Dame de Chartres
Relief: Sancta Camisa (veil of the Virgin), since 876
Image: Vierge Noire (Virgen Negra)

Origin and history

According to tradition, in 876 the cathedral received the relic called Sancta Camisa, a garment venerated as the veil or robe of the Virgin Mary. His arrival made Chartres a first-class Marian pilgrimage centre, a goal of the sick and faithful from all over Europe. The material authenticity of relic belongs to the field of faith and tradition.

A Black Virgin is also venerated in the cathedral. There was a medieval image destroyed during the French Revolution and replaced later; the details of date and author of the current image do not record with documentary certainty. The Marian devotion of Chartres has been attested at least since the 12th century, with a great influx of pilgrims.

"Our Lady of Chartres, Mother who covers us with your cloak, pray for us."

The esoteric or preChristian interpretations of Chartres belong to the literature of dissemination, without endorsement of the Magisterium.
