Marian devotion
Our Lady of Crouch
The Virgin of the bird · Zaragoza
A few kilometres from Zaragoza, the sanctuary of Our Lady of Cogullada bears a devotion whose name evokes the "Cogullada" bird which, according to tradition, guided the finding of the image.
Origin and history
The tradition, collected by Fra. Diego Murillo, speaks of the finding of an image of Mary by a humble woman guided by the singing of a cleft (bird called "cleft"), and of a first hermitage towards the year 637, linked to Bishop San Braulio; these data belong to the legendary realm.
Documentately, in 1657, the canon Claudio Mateo Sorbez ordered the construction of the Capuchin monastery of Cogullada with his fellowship by the hermitage. After the deamortization (1835) he passed to monks of Solesmes (1896) and was then restored with a Neomudéjar character by Ibercaja. His great rosemary is on the Monday of Pentecost, the "Monday of Cogullada."
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
