Main data
Origin and history
Documented history The shrine of Adaikala Madha (Our Lady of the Refuge) is located in the rural village of Elakurichi, Ariyalur district, Tamil Nadu State, India. Since ancient times it is considered one of the first historical Christian santuaries of Tamil Nadu, dedicated to the Virgin Mary as Mother of the Refuge.
The local sources agree to attribute the foundation of the old temple to Constanzo Beschi, Italian Jesuit missionary in southern India, known as Water marquee. A tourist and devotional source of Thanjavur places the construction of the church in the year 1711. Another more generic encyclopedic source indicates only the inicio del siglo XVIII (church consecrated in the "eighteenth century beginning"). The present temple was reconstructed in 1971, preserving the place as a Catholic pilgrimage centre for the region. The Church belongs to the Latin rite and is under the jurisdiction of the Roman Catholic Church.
The government of Tamil Nadu declared this sanctuary as tourist location in 2001, thus recognizing its historical and devotional value in the region.
Tradition and Legend A tradition cited in the historical narration of the encyclopedic web refers that, "to give thanks for the favors received," a King de la zona habría donado 175 acres de tierra for the sanctuary, lands on which the present temple rises. The identity of the king and the specific historical details of this gesture are not accurately documented in the sources consulted, so this donation should be considered a local tradition linked to gratitude to the Virgin for alleged favors or miracles.
They do not contain in the accessible sources detailed legends of Marian apparitions in Elakurichi; the importance of the sanctuary is rather linked to the mission among the poor converted peasants and to the fame of "refuge" of the afflicted, sick and oppressed, who come in search of protection and intercession of the Mother of God.
The image and the sanctuary
The image of the Virgin The available sources describe the sanctuary as famous for its "beautiful statue of Mother Mary"around which the devotion of the faithful is gathered. However, the material (wood, stone, plaster, etc.) and very precise iconographic details. A detailed official description (measurements, author, exact date of the image) is not included in the sources consulted.
From the photographs available on the portals of reviews and social networks, one can see a image of the Virgin Mary in modern devotional style, dressed in mantle, carrying the Child Jesus or presented as a protective Mother, but these visual details are not sufficiently described in official textual sources, so they cannot be fixed rigorously. Therefore, on the exact type of iconography (for example, if it carries scepter, crown, anchor, etc.) does not contain a reliable documented description.
The sanctuary / temple El nombre oficial, según la web del propio santuario y la información turística, es: – Shrine of Our Lady of Refuge, Adaikala Madha Shrine, Elakurichi. In local language it is also called "Adaikkala Madha Shrine"(Sanctuary of the Mother of the Refuge).
The church is located in a rural environment, with wide open spaces and an area of pilgrims. The current structure, reconstructed in 1971, has a mixture of Gothic style and French architecture elements, combined with local features, according to the encyclopedic description. It is a temple of one ship principal with white facade, towers and ornamental elements of the colonial style adapted to Tamil Nadu (data deductible by the photos and the mention of their style).
En cuanto al rango eclesial: – La página enciclopédica en inglés describe la “ecclesiastical or organizational status” how “Minor Basilica”. – Sin embargo, no se ha encontrado en las fuentes oficiales del santuario ni en la información diocesana consultable una confirmación explícita de una formal elevation to lower basilica by the Holy See (with date and decree).
Since the official site of the sanctuary itself is simply presented as “Shrine of Our Lady of Refuge” y “Adaikala Madha Shrine” sin reivindicar de forma destacada el título de basílica menor, y que no se han hallado datos de decreto pontificio: – It does not contain, with sufficient documentary security, the canonical condition of minor basilica., even if a secondary source claims it.
It is clear, however, that the place is recognized as Catholic sanctuary of pilgrimage and Marian reference point for the Catholics of the region.
Sponsorship and coronation
Patronage The sanctuary is an important Marian pilgrimage center for Catholics in the Ariyalur district and other areas of Tamil Nadu, in particular in the Thanjavur region. The sources present it as "Holy pilgrimage center for Roman Catholics”.
However, there is no explicit statement of Official patronage (por ejemplo, patrona principal de una diócesis, de un municipio o de un país) vinculada formalmente a la advocación de Adaikala Madha de Elakurichi. Por tanto: – There is no canonically proclaimed patronage (diocesan, municipal or national) in the sources consulted.
Canonical coronation In the information of the sanctuary, the diocese, and in the encyclopedic and tourist sources consulted, No mention of a canonical coronation of the image (i.e. an official coronation act approved by the Holy See or by delegation). No year is given, no father or delegate.
En consecuencia: – No documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
The shrine of Adaikala Madha is known by several annual holidays and devotional practices. The main sources indicate two public holidays that need to be distinguished:
1. Según una fuente turística detallada de Thanjavur: – Main fiesta (Annual Feast): – Flag ring (Flag Hoisting): Second Saturday after Easter. – Party day - procession with car (Feast Day – Car Procession): Third Saturday after Easter. – Adaikalamadha Festival: Third Sunday after Easter. – Otros momentos devocionales: – Fifth Friday of Lent: “special Way of the Cross” (Vía Crucis especial). – September 8: celebration of the the birth of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
2. According to the encyclopedic entry in English, the sanctuary would be famous for a annual party celebrada el first Saturday and Sunday of December, to which come "thousands of pilgrims from all over the state and the country."
These two descriptions do not match the dates: one places the great party at the paschal time (abril-May) and another in December. The two come from secondary sources, without the official site in sight clarifying the discrepancy. It's possible that

Pray Hail MaryDocumented expansion: Elakurichi and Tamil inculturation
The diocese of Kumbakonam places Elakurichi within its missionary history and recalls that Bishop D. Paul Arulsamy extended pastoral work to that area. The same diocesan page points to its interest in improving the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Refuge and links its dissemination to the linguistic contribution of the Jesuit Costanzo Giuseppe Beschi, called Veeramunivar. This information documents the diocesan life and the expansion of the sanctuary; it does not in itself constitute a judgment of apparitions or miracles.
La crónica de Indian Catholic Matters adds Beschi's biographical context: he arrived at Madurai's mission in 1711, learned Tamil and developed a missionary and literary work deeply adapted to local culture. Elakurichi's invocation is also understood as a history of inculturation: the Catholic faith was expressed in the language, poetry, life forms and devotion of the Tamil population.
The same source retains accounts of the image and origin of the sanctuary. They are presented here as a tradition of the place when they are not accompanied by an independent historical document. The permitted state of veneration describes the existence of the diocesan Catholic sanctuary and its public veneration; supernatural approval is not attributed to dreams, findings or favors narrated in tradition.
