Marian devotion
Our Lady of Stybaliz
Patrona de Álava
In a beautiful Romanesque sanctuary next to Vitoria, the Virgin of Estíbaliz, a very dear medieval size, is the patron of Álava and sign of her Christian identity.
Origin and history
The sanctuary is an outstanding Romanesque work of the 12th century in the surroundings of Argandoña, declared Good of Cultural Interest. In 1138 the monastery was given to the Benedictine, and since ancient times the enclave was linked to the Alavese religious memory, with a very consolidated medieval devotion.
The image is a Roman size venerated in the sanctuary. It was crowned canonically in 1923, by then Bishop Leopoldo Eijo Garay, and proclaimed patron of Álava in 1941.
