Origin and history

According to the documented history of the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal, the Our Lady of Fátima Shrine de Holliston was officially established in 1950 and blessed by the cardinal Richard Cushing, Archbishop of Boston, with the missionary congregation of the Xaverian Missionaries (Xaverian Missionaries). This American sanctuary is born in spiritual continuity with the apparitions of the Virgin of Fatima in Cova da Iria (Portugal, 1917), but it is not a place of apparitions, but a space of prayer, mission and dissemination of devotion to Our Lady of Fatima in the American context.

The compound was developed as Marian shrinewith church, grotto, large gardens and devotional outdoor spaces, designed for retreats, pilgrimages and pastoral activities organized by the Javerians. Over time, the Sanctuary has been consolidated as a reference place for the Catholics of New Englandwith pilgrimages and Marian celebrations, especially around the traditional dates of Fatima, in communion with the Sanctuary of Portugal.

No consta una local tradition or legend (for example, apparitions or other wonders specifically linked to Holliston) other than the general devotion to the Virgin of Fatima who inspired the foundation of the sanctuary; the spirituality and devotional accounts are mainly referred to the facts of Fátima–Cova da Iria (1917).

The image and the sanctuary

The advocation is venerated in the Our Lady of Fátima Shrine (Sanctuary of Our Lady of Fatima) of Holliston, Massachusetts, Latin Catholic rite. The official information available presents it as a Marian shrine belonging to the Xaverian Missionaries, not having the title of minor basilicathe national or diocesan sanctuary formally proclaimed; therefore, does not contain a special canon title beyond his status as a sanctuary led by this congregation.

The sanctuary includes a church and extensive outdoor land with yards, paths and prayer spaces, including a Grotto dedicated to the Virgin of Fatima. They include a number of devotional elements, including the large rosary of stone, known as "one of the largest stone rosaries in the United States," provision that allows the pilgrim to physically walk the accounts while praying. These elements underline the character of a place of retreat, silence and prayer, linked to Marian and missionary spirituality.

The images represented follow the classical iconography of Our Lady of Fatima: the Virgin Mary standing, dressed in white, with a clear cloak and rosary in the handsin direct reference to the apparitions of 1917 to the pastoralists of Cova da Iria. There is no detailed technical description in the sources consulted (author, exact date, type of wood or material, etc.) of Holliston's main image; it can only be said with certainty that it is an image of the Virgin of Fatima according to the devotional model spread from the Portuguese sanctuary.

Sponsorship and coronation

No consta que Our Lady of Fatima of Holliston has been officially proclaimed patron of the city of Holliston, of the state of Massachusetts, of a specific diocese or of a specific civil entity; the advocation is, above all, holder del santuario and centre of regional devotion.

As for the canonical coronation of the image venerated in this sanctuary, the sources consulted (official site of the Shrine of Fatima, information of pilgrimage and reviews available) do not record any pontifical decree or formal celebration comparable to the great Marian canonical coronations. Therefore, with the available data, it should be indicated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

Holliston's devotion is explicitly integrated into the spiritual calendar of Fatima, so the central dates are the 13 May (memory of the first apparition of 1917) and the 13 October (last apparition and "sun miracle"). These dates are, throughout the world, the days of the greatest influx to the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal and, by extension, also mark the liturgical and devotional life of the sanctuaries dedicated to this advocation, including that of Holliston.

The Holliston Sanctuary is described as a place of pilgrimage for the region of New Englandwith faithful who come for solemn masses, Marian processions, community prayer of the rosary and spiritual retreats, especially around the dates of Fatima and in other strong times of the liturgical year. Visitor reviews highlight the atmosphere of peace, the roads between forests and the character of the place, which promotes personal prayer and contemplation in the gardens and in front of the Marian Grotto.

There are no official public statistical data of inflow comparable to those of the Shrine of Fatima in Portugal, but the sources agree to emphasize its importance as Marian center very visited in and around Boston, with activities organized by the Javerian Missionaries in missionary and Marian key.

Link to the Rosary

La advocación de Our Lady of Fatima is intrinsically linked to Rosaryfrom the original apparitions of 1917, when the Virgin presents herself as "Lady of the Rosary" and insistently invites her to pray for peace and conversion. This rosarian character is reflected in a visible way in Holliston, where the Sanctuary houses one of the largest stone rosaries in the United States, designed precisely to promote the meditated prayer of the Rosary while physically walking the path of "accounts."

Although the sources consulted do not describe in detail a fixed schedule of community rosaries, the presence of this great monumental rosary and the very identity of the sanctuary as a place dedicated to Our Lady of Fatima allow us to state that the Rosario occupies a central place in the devotional life of the Sanctuary. The Rosary, in this context, becomes a school of contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with Mary, a means of intercession for peace and mission, and a spiritual bond that unites the pilgrims of Holliston with the Sanctuary of Fatima in Portugal and with the Church who, throughout the world, welcomes the Virgin's call to conversion and persevering prayer.
