Russia and consecration: what was asked, what was done and what was discussed

Marian devotion

The hard data, first of all

Of the seven pontifical consecrations or deliveries that were compared to the flat text of vatican.va, only DOS contain the word "Russia": that of Pius XII of 1952 and that of Francis of 2022.

The 1942 (two), 1964, 1982, 1983 (letter to the bishops and annexed act) and 1984 no la contienen: zero occurrences, counted on the clean text of HTML tags.

This is not an opinion or a position: it is a count. And it's the firm ground that you can discuss everything else.

PART ONE: What exactly was requested, and when

Hay three piecesAnd they don't say the same thing:

1. The announcement - July 13, 1917, part two of the secret

«She speaks to prevent her, I'll come ask the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the repairing Communion of the First Saturdays. If my wishes are met, Russia will become and there will be peace; if not, it will spread its mistakes throughout the world, promoting wars and persecutions to the Church. [...] Finally my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate me to Russiawhich will become, and will be granted to the world some time of peace. "
- Text published by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in "The Message of Fatima" (26-VI.2000), taken from the Tercera Memoria (August 31, 1941).
📌 It's an ad, not a request.: «I'll come ask. "And the verifiable text that contains it is dated in 1941.

2. The formal petition - Tuy, June 13, 1929

«The time has come when God asks the Holy Father to do, in union with all the Bishops of the world, the consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart., promising to save her by this means. There are so many souls that God's Justice condemns for sins committed against Me, that I come to ask for reparation: sacrifice for this intention and pray. "
— Memories of Sister Lucia I, Apéndice II, pp. 194-195.
📌 Here are the seven words on which the whole controversy revolves: "in union with all the Bishops of the world." It's 1929, not 1917.

3. A third formulation - letter of 29 May 1930

«If I don't cheat on myselfthe good God promises to end the persecution in Russia if the Holy Father deserves to do, and to command the Bishops of the Catholic world to do likewise, a solemn and public act of reparation and consecration of Russia to the Holy Hearts of Jesus and Mary…»
— DCF. Selection, doc 125, pp. 516-518.
- In 1930 the consecration requested is to the two HeartsNot just the Immaculate. The two formulations are of primary source and can't be mixed without saying.

PART 2: What was done - the seven pontifical, cross-woven actions

Method: downloaded vatican.va texts, stripped of HTML tags and entities, standardized and counted the occurrence of "Russia / Russia / Russia" on the clean text. It's not a reading impression: it's a count.

The key, verbatim texts

**1952 — *Sacred vergent year [Bleep] (Latin text oficial):

«Nos interea, ut Nostrae vestraeque supplicationesque facilius exaudiantur, utque singulare erga vos benevolentiae Nostrae praebeamus documentum, quemadmodum paucis ante annis universum hominum genus Immaculato Deiparae Virginis Cordi consecravimus, ita in praesens Cunctos Russiarum populos eidem Immaculato Cordi peculiarissimo mode dedicamus ac consecramus…»

The official Italian version headlines the heading without ambiguity: "9. Consecration of the peoples of Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary». Published in AAS 44 (1952), 505-511.

Two details: in the Latin text no Fatima appearsand this act was not made in union with all the bishops of the world.

1984 - the event, in the Spanish version published by the Holy See in the 2000 document:

«... embraces with the love of Mother and of the Lord's Servant this human world, which we trust and consecrate, full of concern for the earthly and eternal fate of men and peoples. In a special way we trust and consecrate those men and nations who have a particular need for this dedication and consecration. «¡Nos acogemos a tu protección, Santa Madre de Dios!»…»

2022 — Francisco:

«Therefore, Mother of God and of us, we solemnly entrust and consecrate to your Immaculate Heart our people, the Church and the whole humanity, Russia and Ukraine.»

Two disclosure errors that this survey disassembles

1. ❌ "Paul VI consecrated Russia on November 21, 1964." It is stated, among others, by a very widespread response sheet. It is false about the text: Pablo VI Remember the act of Pius XII, announces the sending of the Golden Rose to Fatima and Conducts "all human gender". No mention of Russia.

2. ❌ "John Paul II appointed Russia in Fatima in 1982." Equally false about the text: zero occurrences.

And a third, more subtle: on the radiomensage of 1942 sometimes said to contain a "veiled allusion to Russia," reading the phrase "to the peoples separated by error or discord, pointed out to those who profess you unique devotion, where there was no house that did not show your venerable image». That's an interpretative reading. The text does not name Russia. To present it as "consecrated Russia" is inaccurate.

THIRD PART: The controversy - the two positions, without taking sides

Which is made textual and is not in dispute

  • The act of 25 March 1984 does not contain the word "Russia".
  • La call letter of 8 December 1983 exists, is public and in vatican.va: John Paul II writes to the bishops asking them "renew this Act together with me». Nor does that letter name Russia.
  • The Holy See describes the 1984 act as a fact "en unión espiritual con todos los Obispos del mundo, precedentemente «convocados»».

The position of the Holy See: "it is made"

Reference document: Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, The message of Fatima26 June 2000, submission signed by Tarcisio Bertone:

«Sister Lucia personally confirmed that this solemn and universal act of consecration was in keeping with Our Lady's wishes. («Yes, it is done, as Our Lady asked, since 25 March 1984«: «Sí, desde el 25 de marzo de 1984, ha sido hecha tal como Nuestra Señora había pedido»: letter of 8 November 1989). Therefore, any discussion, as well as any further request, is unfounded.»

Other support for this position:

  • El communiqué by Cardinal Angelo Sodano read in Fatima the 13 May 2000with his symbolic reading of the third part of the secret and the events of 1989.
  • El Cardinal Bertone, en L’ultima veggente di Fatima (2007, with letter of presentation from Benedict XVI of 22 February 2007): "Russia has been consecrated, and the consecration took place on 25 March 1984».
  • Third-party statements to Sr. Lucia: 29 August 1989; 3 July 1990 to Fr. Robert Fox; 17 November 2001 to Bertone, published in L’Osservatore Romano of 9 January 2002, p. 7.
  • The underlying argument (for example, it makes it, Paul Kengor en el National Catholic RegisterMarch 23, 2022): that John Paul II avoided the name for diplomatic reasons - in the middle of the Cold War, with the Church pursued after the Iron Curtain - and which "all peoples and nations" necessarily includes Russia.

The opposite position: "was not done as requested"

Who: Brother Michel of the Holy Trinity (The whole truth about Fatima / The Whole Truth About Fatima), Nicholas Gruner y The Fatima Center, Christopher Ferrara; in Spanish, publications of the TFP orbit as Treasures of the Faith No 245 (May 2022).

Your two material requirements, taken from the letter of Tuy 1929:

1. that the Pope name of Russia;

2. in union with all the bishops, in an effective and verifiable manner.

Your arguments:

  • The 1984 text no dice «Rusia» - this is a fact, not an opinion.
  • "Spiritual union" with bishops "called" no es, they support the effective and simultaneous union that Tuy's text requests; and there is no public record of bishop accessions per bishop.
  • They do documentary criticism of the letter of 8 November 1989: que es mecanographythat the original has not been displayed with its chain of archival custody, and that would contain historically problematic references. Frère Michel claims that Sister Lucia changed position por obedienciaNot out of conviction.
  • They call for an interview attributed to Sr Lucia published by Sol de Fátima en 1985: «There was not the participation of all the bishops nor was Russia mentioned».

And the framework that the Holy See itself puts on top of all the discussion

Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, 2000 theological comment:

«La autoridad de las revelaciones privadas es esencialmente diversa de la única revelación pública: ésta exige nuestra fe […] Su función no es la de… «completar» la Revelación definitiva de Cristo, sino la de ayudar a vivirla más plenamente en una cierta época de la historia.»

And, against any fatalistic reading of these texts:

«The future is not determined in an immutable way, and the image the children saw is not an early film of the future, of which nothing could be changed. [...] Por eso están totalmente fuera de lugar las explicaciones fatalísticas del «secreto».»

PART 4: "Russia will spread its mistakes" - what the text says and what does not

From the text of 13 July 1917 they are announced, literally.Five things:

1. A worse war that which was then released, "in the pontificate of Pius XI," preceded by "a night illuminated by an unknown light."

2. If the request is not met: Russia "will spread its mistakes around the world".

3. Wars and persecutions of the Church.

4. «The good will be martyred and the Holy Father will have much to suffer; several nations will be annihilated.»

5. Final promise"At last my Immaculate Heart will triumph... and will be granted to the world some time of peace."

FIFTH PART: The parallel with the kings of France

It is one of the most cited and worst counted pages of all fatimite literature. It deserves an honest treatment, and is done in two separate and rotated blocks.

What Fatima's message says

In August 1931, en Rianjo (Rianxo, A Coruña), where her superiors had sent her to rest for a month, Sister Lucia wrote to the bishop of Leiria a letter dated the 29 August 1931. In it it attributes to Our Lord —«I thought His Divine Majesty told me"- these words:

«Let my ministers know that, since they follow the example of the king of France in delaying the execution of my request, they will follow him in misfortune. It will never be too late to turn to Jesus and Mary.»
- Text according to the edition of Brother Michel of the Holy Trinity, The Whole Truth About Fatima, vol. II, chap. VII, note 705, which refers to * * Joaquín María Alonso, C.M.F., Fatima to the Sphinx, Madrid, Sol de Fatima, 1979, p. 97 * *. One's own translation about that lesson.

Y, en el relato de 1936 about Tuy's vision, the famous phrase:

«They didn't want to meet my request!... Like the king of France, they will repent and do it, but it will be late.»
⚠️ It's four different pieces, not one. (1) the letter from Rianjo of 29-VIII-1931; (2) la carta al P. Gonçalves de 21-I-1935(3) the account of 1936 on Tuy, which is that of the famous phrase; (4) the declaration to P. Boy of 1946, which says something textually different: "Like the King of France, they do not listen to my requests; the Holy Father will consecrate Russia, but it will be late.».
Whoever melts them on a single date is making a source error. Y el announcer changes according to the editionOur Lord in one, Our Lady in another.

And a limit of our research, said without any doubt: We have not been able to check the Portuguese autograph of Rianjo's letter or a facsimile. What circulates in Portuguese has real variants ("Participate in My Ministers» / «Make My Ministers Know»; «My mandate» / «my request»; «distress» / «disgrace» / «infortúnio»). If you quote, you have to quote the edition, not as a diplomatic transcript.

What the files say

All Fatima's text says is "the king of France». No name, no date, no description of the fact. The identification with Luis XIV and with the requests of the Sacred Heart to Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque in 1689 is of the Fatimite traditionnot the text.

And about that identification, historiography says:

«Santa Margarita María had advised to reach the R.P. de la Chaise, confessor of Louis XIV [...]; did she follow that advice? We ignore him, we ignore the result of his efforts, we ignore even if he made efforts. [...] Rome was disunderstood in 1688, Louis XIV did not receive the Message that she wanted him to come.»
— **Auguste Hamon, S.J., History of devotion to the Sacred Heartt. III, p. 322. * * Hamon is also the author of the specific monograph on the subject: The Message of the Sacred Heart to Louis XIV, France (Beauchesne, 1918).

Three documentary silences that reinforce the objection: Croiset (1691)the capital work of spreading devotion, does not post the message to the king; Languet (1729)which does pick up the first nine Fridays, He doesn't mention it either.and the message It is only made public in 1867, when the writings of the saint were published after his beatification of 1864 - 178 years laterand no autographs preserved.

The critical point: his own defender recognizes him

This is the decisive piece, and it is of a remarkable honesty. In the note 710 of its volume II, Brother Michel of the Holy Trinity writes:

«Some historians, arguing from the absence of any contemporary document that proves that the king was in fact informed, simply thought that he never knew. The words of Our Lord to Sister Lucia will bring the debate to an end. El rey finalmente se enteró de las peticiones, pero «no quiso atenderlas» y «retardó su ejecución».»
Own translation.

That is: the main defender of the fatimite version accepts that there is no contemporary document y solves the documentary vacuum with a private revelation. That's a theological argument, not a historical one. And he says so himself.

About Louis XV and Louis XVI

  • Luis XV: no documented request addressed to him, y is not in any text of Fatima. To say "Louis XV also did not want" states more than any file allows. In fact, Frère Michel himself says the opposite: that the royal house had begun to fulfill the wishes of the Sacred Heart por la reina María Leszczynska - wife of Louis XV -, by the Delphin, by Madame Elisabeth and by Louis XVI himself.
  • Luis XVI: the text of the so-called "vote" exists and is read in full in * * Victor Alet, S. J., France and the Sacred Heart, 1892, pp. 256-260. Es a prayer and a vote in six articles * *, not a consecration consumed: article 4 is required to go "in person, within three months of the day of my release"a Notre-Dame de Paris to pronounce the act of consecration. That release never came. The devotional tradition dates back to 21 June 1792 (Alt) or on 21 July; the execution was the 21 January 1793: 7 monthsNo semana. Y up authenticity is not established: without autograph, printed from 1815. Alit himself, who is his apologist, grants that "ce n’est là qu’une simple conjecture, without any positive foundation"on the attribution to Father Hébert.

I'll tell you what you're saying.

What Fatima's message says. In August 1931, in Rianjo, Sister Lucia wrote to his bishop a words that he attributed to Our Lord: that his ministers, "for following the example of the king of France in delaying the execution of my request, will follow him in misfortune." The Fatimite tradition identifies that king with Louis XIV and with the requests of the Sacred Heart of 1689. (Private revelation. The Church does not force her to believe it; the text does not give the name of the king.)

What the files say. No document is kept to prove that Louis XIV received that message. Jesuit Auguste Hamon, author of the monograph on the subject, concludes: "Louis XIV did not receive the Message." The letters of the saint were published in 1867, 178 years later. The "vote of Louis XVI" is an attributed text, without autograph, published since 1815, and the date given to it by tradition - June 21, 1792 - is seven months, not one week, before its execution.

Both are true in your own order., and the second does not destroy the first: a mystical text is not a notarial act, and a loophole is not a theological rebuttal. What would be false is to present the first as if it were the second.
