Main data
Origin and history
No consta una officially recognized Marian advocation by the Church with the precise title of "Our Lady of Ghana" linked to a specific Marian shrine in Custom or other dioceses of the country, according to the documentation available online (Church in Ghana, Diocese, Marian shrines, repertories of advocacy and Catholic press). At present, the main public references to Kumasi focus on the city as the capital of the Ashanti region and its historical and cultural relevance, without specific mention of a Marian national sanctuary under that title.
In Ghana there is a consolidated Catholic presence and various Marian devotions (especially under universal titles such as Our Lady of the Rosary, Immaculate Conception o Our Lady of Sorrows), but there is no Marian advocation of its own, with the official name "Our Lady of Ghana," canonically recognized as a national sanctuary or with similar status. They do not include, in diocesan or sanctuary sources, Marian groups of pilgrimage in Kumasi who have received particular recognition as a national Marian or diocesan sanctuary under that specific title.
From the historical point of view - documented, therefore, it can be spoken with certainty of the presence of Ghanaian Catholic communities with various Marian devotions, but not of a specific advocation universally recognized under the name "Our Lady of Ghana." Any more specific data on apparitions, foundations or miraculous facts relating to this title, as it does not appear in verifiable sources, no consta and cannot be considered a documented history.
The image and the sanctuary
It does not contain, in verifiable sources, a imagen marian concrete (type, material, author or unique iconography) officially venerated with the title of "Our Lady of Ghana" in Kumasi or in other dioceses of the country. There are no secure data on a headline image associated with a Marian pilgrimage grotto that has been recognized as a diocesan or national sanctuary under this title.
Similarly, there is no Marian shrine of - under that name - in Kumasi: no reference is found to a temple, minor basilica, national or diocesan sanctuary bearing the canonical name "Sanctuary of Our Lady of Ghana" in the accessible documentation of the Church in Ghana, in directories of Marian sanctuaries or in repertories of advocations. In various parishes and Ghanaian Catholic communities there are chapels, grotto and altars dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but their dedication is often made to universal Marian titles (for example, Our Lady of the Rosary) or local ones without a clearly documented national spread.
As a result, with regard to this vocation, no consta a reliable description of the image (material, style, particular iconography) or the canonical classification of the place of worship (parish, diocesan sanctuary, national sanctuary or minor basilica) that can be rigorously affirmed.
Sponsorship and coronation
– Patronage: It does not know that "Our Lady of Ghana" has been declared official employer of the city of Kumasi, of the diocese, of some other diocese of Ghana or of the nation as a whole. There is no formal proclamation of patronage under this Marian title in diocesan legislation and in the public sources of the Church in Ghana.
– Canon coronation: There is no documented canonical coronation of a Marian image with the title "Our Lady of Ghana," either by the mandate of a pontiff or by the decree of a pontifical delegate. It should therefore be clearly stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
No consta una litigation fiesta propia universally recognized in Ghana's calendar under the title "Our Lady of Ghana" (neither in the general Roman calendar nor in the particular published calendars of Ghanaian dioceses). The Ghanaian Catholic communities celebrate, on the other hand, the great solemnities and Marian memories of the Latin calendar: the Immaculate Conception, the Nativity of Mary, Our Lady of the Rosary, the Assumption, etc., as well as local parishes and Marian movements, but these celebrations do not appear officially linked to the title "Our Lady of Ghana."
With regard to pilgrimages and Marian grotto, se sabe que en muchas diócesis africanas (incluida Ghana) se desarrollan devociones en grutas construidas a imitación de Lourdes o como espacios de oración mariana; sin embargo, para el caso concreto de Kumasi y de una advocación denominada “Nuestra Señora de Ghana”, no constan datos públicos sobre: – fechas de peregrinación oficialmente aprobadas, – cifras de afluencia, – tradiciones populares específicas (procesiones, promesas, novenas propias) vinculadas con certeza a ese título.
It can therefore be said only that in the Ghanaian Catholic Church there is a live Marian piety in general, but they do not contain, with documentary support, their own devotional features or a specific main party for "Our Lady of Ghana."
Link to the Rosary
It does not contain, in the sources consulted, a specific and documented relationship between a Marian advocation entitled "Our Lady of Ghana" and the prayer of Rosary (for example, particular indulgences, statutes of co-fradies, episcopal decrees or accounts of apparitions that officially link this devotion to the Rosary).
However, in the life of the Church in Ghana, as in many local Churches of Latin tradition, the Rosario occupies a central place in Marian piety: accompanies community meetings, pilgrimages to Marian groups, vigil and missionary campaigns. Where the Ghanaian Catholic communities gather around the Virgin - under universal or local titles - the Rosary is often the privileged way to contemplate the mysteries of Christ with Mary, to intercede for peace, reconciliation and justice, and to sustain the hope of the faithful, especially in contexts of poverty and trial.
Thus, although there is no particular legal or historical link between the title "Our Lady of Ghana" and the Rosary, it can be affirmed in the theological and pastoral key that every authentic Marian devotion in Ghana is enriched and deepened through the prayer of the Rosarywhich unites the Ghanaian Catholic community with the universal Church in contemplating the mysteries of salvation.
