Origin and history

La devoción a Our Lady of Giddle (Matka Boża Gidelska) is linked to a Little Marian statue found in the field in 1516, in the surroundings of the present town of Giddle, in central Poland, within the current voivodship (department) of Łódő. This advocation is inserted into the wide movement of Polish Marian shrines that emerged around images considered miraculous, especially between the 16th and 18th centuries, when Marian devotion in the country was extraordinary.

According to tradition or legendA peasant found in his field the tiny image of the Virgin with the Child, buried or mixed with the earth, and carried it with veneration; the place of the find became the focus of pilgrimages, especially when they began to be attributed to the image thanks and healing. This narrative is part of the local devotional memory, but contemporary documentation is not available to enable the precise reconstruction of the circumstances of the finding; therefore, it is a pious tradition, not a strictly documented history.

As for the documented historyThe image was soon the object of public veneration and the Dominicans settled in Giddle to guard it and to care for the pilgrims, giving rise to the present sanctuary. Over the centuries, the temple has been extended and embellished, and the veneration of the Virgin of Giddle has been consolidated in the region. The basilica and the sanctuary are now integrated into the ecclesial life of the corresponding diocese in central Poland; Giddle is recognized as one of the many Marian centers in the country, although it does not reach the national dimension of others like Jasna Góra in Częstochowa.

The image and the sanctuary

The image of Our Lady of Giddle es una small Marian statue, very small (traditionally described as "very small"), which represents the Virgin Mary with the Child Jesus. The exact material (wood, stone or other), or a detailed iconographic description, is not with certainty in the easily accessible sources; therefore, it can only be said with certainty that it is a carving of the Virgin with the Child, considered miraculous by the faithful. Where a data is not verifiable in safe sources, it should be indicated that no consta Precisely.

The place of worship is the Marian sanctuary of the Dominicans in Giddlein the region of Łódő (voivodship of Łódő, central Poland). The temple is attended by the Order of Preachers (Dominicans) and is recognized as minor basilica, which indicates a special link with the Holy See and the importance of the veneration that is attached there to the Virgin. This church-sanctuary is the spiritual core of the town of Giddle and a reference point for pilgrims who come from various parts of Poland. The architecture of the whole, typical of the great Baroque shrines and later of the region, responds to the model of the Marian church of pilgrimage, enriched over the centuries by the offerings and the constant influx of faithful.

Sponsorship and coronation

Our Lady of Giddle exercises a Local and regional patronage: is particularly venerated as a patron of the town of Giddle and its surroundings, within the current voivodship of Łódő. It is not known that it has been formally proclaimed patron of the whole Polish nation, a title that in the Catholic consciousness of the country is primarily the responsibility of Our Lady of Częstochowa.

As for the coronation of the image, it is documented the statue was crowned in 1923. Local devotional sources point to this date as a milestone in the history of the sanctuary, in the context of the numerous canonical coronations of Marian images in Poland, especially from the 17th and 18th centuries and with renewed momentum in modern times. However, the name of the pontiff who explicitly authorized this coronation or the pontifical delegate who made it is not clearly identified in easily accessible sources. Therefore, from the point of view of historical rigour, it should be indicated: the precise information of the Pontiff or the delegate responsible for the coronation is not included in the consulting documentationalthough the tradition of the place speaks of a coronation recognized by the Church in 1923.

Party and devotion

La main party of Our Lady of Giddle is celebrated the first Sunday of Maythe date on which the pilgrimages and liturgical acts are concentrated in the sanctuary. This celebration is part of the context of the month traditionally dedicated to Mary in popular piety, and is one of the most significant moments in the devotional calendar of the region.

The shrine of Giddle receives throughout the year numerous pilgrimsespecially from central Poland, who come to entrust themselves to the Virgin, to thank her for her favors and to participate in the Marian liturgy. There are no official figures of inflow in easily accessible sources, but the place is among the important Marian centers of the nation, even without reaching the massive pilgrimage of Jasna Góra. Devotion is expressed through solemn masses, processions with the small image or with its replica, offering of devotees, confessions and practices of Marian piety that are typical of Polish tradition, such as Marian songs and novenas.

Between popular traditions linked to the sanctuary are the annual pilgrimage around the May feast and the prayers for the intercession of the Virgin of Giddle in situations of illness, family difficulties or needs of the field and of daily work. The image, which emerged according to tradition in a peasant context, retains a strong symbolic link with the simple life of the people and with confidence in the maternal protection of Mary.

Link to the Rosary

In the sources consulted does not contain a specific or exclusive link of Our Lady of Giddle with the prayer of the Rosary, as is the case in explicitly rosarian advocacy (for example, the Virgin of the Rosary). No particular apparitions, promises or definitions related to the Rosary are documented in this particular sanctuary.

However, the sanctuary is entrusted to the dominics, order closely linked historically to the promotion of Holy Rosary throughout the Church. This fact makes it possible to state, in the key of general Marian reflection, that devotion to Our Lady of Giddle is naturally accompanied by the prayer of the Rosary: Dominican spirituality encourages the meditation of the mysteries of Christ in the hand of Mary, and in the Dominican shrines it is common for the Rosary to have a privileged place in the pastoral, pilgrimages and Marian celebrations. Thus, even if there is no official title "of the Rosary" associated with Giddle, the Rosary appears as an ordinary path of contemplation and supplication for the faithful who pilgrim to the small image found in the field, joining the great Marian tradition of Poland, a nation deeply rooted in Marian prayer and in the meditation of the mysteries of Christ's life with Mary.
