Main data
Origin and history
El Monastery of Gračanica is one of the great spiritual centers of Serbian Orthodox Christianity and is dedicated to the Sleeping of the Most Holy Mother of God (Assumption / Sleeping of the Virgin Mary). It was founded by the Serbian king Esteban Uroš II Milutin to 1321on the remains of a former 6th-century Paleocrist church in the present town of Gračanica, near Pristina, in the Kosovo and Metohia region, which Serbia considers its southern province.
From the point of view documented historyGračanica is considered one of the last great monumental works of King Milutin. The monastery was an important medieval religious and cultural center, linked to the diocese of Lipljan (ancient Ulpiana), which has been the episcopal seat since Byzantine times. In 2006 the monastery was included by UNESCO in the "Medieval Monuments in Kosovo" set, recognized as World Heritage Site and, at the same time, on the list of assets at risk due to the political situation and conflicts in the region.
As regards tradition and ecclesial memorythe Virgin venerated in Gračanica is simply invoked as the Most Holy Mother of God (Bogorodica) patron of the monastery, whose protection has been considered especially linked to the survival of the Orthodox Serbian people in Kosovo through wars, occupations and persecutions. This protective and comforting dimension of the Mother of God is part of devotional feeling, but it is not based on accounts of particular apparitions or wonders with date and precise documentation; therefore, it does not contain a miraculous foundational legend differentiated from the monastery's own history.
The image and the sanctuary
La advocación de Nuestra Señora de Gračanica (Bogorodica Gračanička) is attached to the set of icons and frescoes Marian preserved in the monastic church, rather than to a single isolated image. The main temple is the Church of the Sleeping of the Virgin (Uspije Presvete Bogorodice), of Byzantine-Orthodox Serbian rite. The interior is covered by a wide cycle of Byzantine-Serbian frescoes of the early 14th century, considered among the best of Serbian medieval art.
Among these frescoes are the scenes of the life of Christ and of the Virgin: Annunciation, Nativity, Presentation, Sleeping, as well as representations of the Mother of God in prayer and as Theotokos (Mother of God) with the Child. The Virgin therefore appears according to the classical oriental iconography: wall icon / fresh, Byzantine style, with dark robe and mantle (maphorion) with stars, holding the Child or in position of intercession. There is no official description of a imagen titular única (for example, a specific miraculous handheld icon); devotion is addressed to the Mother of God as represented in the church's iconographic set.
El sanctuary es el Monastery of Gračanica (in Serbian, Manastir Gračanica), female monastery of the Iglesia ortodoxa serbia. Architectural, the church presents the typical Serbian-Byzantine style: a cross-inscribed plant, step domes and brick combined with decorative stone. It does not know that the church has the rank of minor basilica (Catholic title) or that it has been proclaimed "national sanctuary" in Catholic terms; its importance is that of a great monastery and place of Orthodox pilgrimage, with international recognition for its historical-artistic value.
Sponsorship and coronation
The monastery of Gračanica honors the Virgin as patron of the monastery itself and the town of Gračanica; in the contemporary description it is mentioned as "the Virgin Mary, patron of the monastery." In the context of the Serbian Orthodox Church, Gračanica is one of the main Marian centres in Serbian Kosovo, but does not contain a formal decree of diocesan or national patronage in Latin mode recorded in Catholic sources.
On a canonical coronation of the image (in the Catholic sense: pontifical coronation or decreed by the Holy See), does not contain a documented canonical coronation. The Serbian Orthodox Church has its own rites of veneration and does not use the pontifical coronations system of the Catholic Church; therefore, there are no references to an official coronation by a Pope or his delegate in relation to Our Lady of Gračanica.
Party and devotion
The main feast linked to this advocation is that of the Sleeping of the Most Holy Mother of God (Velika Gospojina), held in accordance with the Orthodox calendar August 15 (or 28 August in communities following the Julian calendar). In Gračanica this solemnity is lived as a true "Second Easter"of the people, with the church filled with faithful, participation of bishops and clergy, processions and an intense liturgical celebration.
During Velika Gospojina Pilgrims come from various points in Kosovo and other regions of Serbia, as well as from the Serbian diaspora, to honor the Mother of God, to participate in the Divine Liturgy, to confess and to communicate. The local press describes a great influx of faithful and a climate of deep devotion, in which the Virgin is invoked as a protector in the face of the historical and political difficulties of the Serbian community in Kosovo. There are no official numbers of pilgrims in the sources consulted, but the celebration is repeatedly described as "busy" and of central importance to the religious life of the region.
In addition to the Feast of the Sleep, the daily life of the monastery - with the prayer of the Office, the liturgy and the veneration of the icons - supports a stable and sober Marian devotion, specific to the Eastern Monacate, focused on the intercession of the Mother of God and the contemplation of the mysteries of Christ through the liturgical cycle.
Link to the Rosary
In the sources consulted on the Monastery of Gračanica and her Marian devotion no consta a specific relationship of this advocation with the prayer of Rosary in its Latin form. The context is that of Iglesia ortodoxa serbiawhere Marian prayer is expressed mainly through liturgical hymns (such as the Akáthistos to the Mother of God), troparia, kontakia and the veneration of icons, rather than through the Rosary as it is prayed in the Western Catholic tradition.
However, from a general Marian perspective, the Rosary allows the Catholic faithful to spiritually join the same Virgin who is venerated in Gračanica: TheotokosMother of God, who intimately participates in the mysteries of Christ's life, death and resurrection. While the Orthodox pilgrims contemplate these mysteries through the frescoes and hymns of the Byzantine liturgy, the Catholic meditates on them with the beads of the Rosary. In this way, the prayer of the Rosary can be a way to accompany the devotion to Our Lady of Gračanica, looking, as in the frescoes of the monastery, at the joyful, painful, glorious and luminous mysteries of the life of the Lord next to Mary, in a spirit of respect and openness towards the rich Marian tradition of the Serbian Orthodox Church.
