Our Lady of Guadalupe of Guatemala, the main Guadalupan centre of the country, venerated in the Sanctuary of Guadalupe

From the 18th century Mexico and the territories of ancient New Spain - including Guatemala - received official impetus to this cult, especially when in 1737 he was proclaimed patron of Mexico City and in 1746 patron of all the territories of New Spain, with his own mass and office confirmed by Benedict XIV in 1754.
Main data
Origin and history
In Guatemala, devotion to Our Lady of Guadalupe is directly linked to the spread of the cult to the Virgin of Guadalupe of Mexico, whose apparition to San Juan Diego on the hill of Tepeyac in 1531 was officially recognized by the Holy See and established liturgical on December 12.
La documented history of the Guadalupan temple in Guatemala City indicates that from the spread of this devotion a temple dedicated to the Virgin of Guadalupe was erected in the Guatemalan capital, today known as Sanctuary of Guadalupe, in area 1 of the city. This sanctuary, of colonial origin, has undergone various architectural transformations over time, but has been consolidated as the country's main centre of religious veneration and as one of the poles of popular urban religiosity every December 12.
As regards local traditions or legends (own apparitions, prodigious findings of the image or miraculous foundational facts in Guatemala), in the sources consulted there is no specific account equivalent to that of Tepeyac for the case of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe of Guatemala City. The Guatemalan devotion is presented rather as a reception and expansion of the Mexican advocation on Guatemalan soil, then assumed with characteristic features of popular urban and national piety.
The image and the sanctuary
The general access sources consulted do not describe in technical detail the headline image venerated in the Sanctuary of Guadalupe in Guatemala City (exact type of support, material, author, date of realization or restorations). It is not, therefore, certain whether it is an oil painting, a printed reproduction of the ayate or a sculpture with Guadalupana iconography; it can only be affirmed, by the context of devotion, that represents the Virgin of Guadalupe according to the Mexican model (Virgin mestiza, standing on the moon, held by an angel, with a starry mantle and a fait of pregnancy). Since these specific data do not appear in the sources consulted, it is expressly indicated: does not contain a detailed technical description of the image.
The temple where it is venerated is currently known as Sanctuary of Guadalupe, located in area 1 of Guatemala City. The national press presents it as a reference Marian sanctuary for Guadalupana devotion in the country, heir to a temple of colonial origin that has been expanded and modified. The formal title of minor basilica or its elevation as National sanctuary By decree of the Episcopal Conference, it should therefore be indicated: does not officially contain the rank of minor basilica or national sanctuary in the accessible documentation. The religious and pastoral function it exercises, however, is clearly that of urban sanctuary of pilgrimage on 12 December.
Sponsorship and coronation
The Virgin of Guadalupe was declared patron of Mexico City in 1737 and patron of all the territories of New Spain in 1746, including regions that are now part of Guatemala. Then Pius X proclaimed it patrona de América Latina in 1910 and Pius XII titled it “Emperatriz de las Américas” in 1945, giving the advocation a continental reach. In the specific case of Guatemala, the sources consulted do not expressly record a pontifical or episcopal decree that the country's main patron name; therefore, in strict terms of documentation: does not contain a formally documented national patronage for Guatemala in available sources, although devotion is of a widely national nature.
On a canonical coronation specific of the venerated image at the Sanctuary of Guadalupe in Guatemala City, no secure data on date, pontifical decree or papal delegate are found in the ordinary sources (official directory, international Catholic press, historical synthesis). Since the pontifical coronation of the Virgin of Guadalupe del Tepeyac (Mexico) is well documented (1895) but refers to the Mexican image and not to the Guatemalan one, it is necessary to distinguish both realities. So, for the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Guatemala (Sanctuary of Guadalupe, Guatemala City) it must be stated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
La main party of Our Lady of Guadalupe is celebrated the 12 December, a date set liturgical in memory of the last of the apparitions of 1531 to San Juan Diego. In Guatemala, this date has an enormous religious and cultural resonance: the Guatemalan press highlights that every December 12 the apparition of the Virgin of Guadalupe is commemorated and various liturgical and popular activities are held.
In Guatemala City, the Sanctuary of Guadalupe becomes the axis of a great urban forestry, with pilgrimages from different neighborhoods, parishes and communities. There is an intense influx of faithful, processions, successive masses, confessions, night and early morning visits, as well as manifestations of popular piety such as floral offerings, burning of candles and Marian songs. Although accessible sources do not always provide precise and consistent numbers of attendees, they describe December 12 as one of the most significant mass religious events in the Guatemalan capital, with large participation of families and young people.
The popular Guatemalan religiosity linked to Guadalupe also includes cultural expressions (music, dances, typical costumes, caravan pilgrimages from peripheral neighborhoods) and a strong dimension of urban and national identity, in tune with the continental character of the Guadalupana devotion highlighted by the pontifical magisterium. Where there is no exact quantitative data, it can only be said in general: there is a great influx of faithful and a consolidated tradition of pilgrimages and celebrations around the Sanctuary of Guadalupe.
Link to the Rosary
The sources consulted do not document a specific and own link between the advocation of Our Lady of Guadalupe of Guatemala (Sanctuary of Guadalupe, Guatemala City) and unique practices of prayer of the Rosary (for example, a historical fellowship of the Rosary linked to this sanctuary, particular indulgences for the Rosary in this place, etc.). It should therefore be clearly noted: there is no particular documented link with the Rosary beyond the common Marian piety of the Church.
However, the Rosary occupies a central place in Guadalupan spirituality in general, as meditation of the mysteries of Christ's life with Mary and as a simple and repetitive prayer especially rooted in Latin America. In the context of the Sanctuary of Guadalupe in Guatemala, it is reasonable to assume - in continuity with universal Catholic practice and Latin American Marian tradition - that the Rosary accompanies the pilgrimages, the vigil prior to the feast of December 12 and the daily devotional life of the faithful; however, it is a pastoral inferencenot a specific historical data.
Theologically, the figure of the Virgin of Guadalupe - which leads to Christ and presents herself as a Mother close to the peoples of Américo - naturally harmonizes with the Rosary: in every ten years it is
