Marian devotion
Our Lady of Guadalupe (Hondarribia)
Patrona de Hondarribia (Gipuzkoa)
On the top of Mount Jaizkibel, on Hondarribia, the shrine of the Virgin of Guadalupe guards the patron of the village, linked to the famous Alarde that commemorates the release of the siege of 1638.
Origin and history
The sanctuary has been erected as a hermitage since at least the 16th century, and the advocation is documented before 1502, with typology related to the Guadalupe de Cáceres. Destroyed and rebuilt several times by the siege of the villa, the current building is from the 19th century. Tradition says the hermitage was raised where two children found the image.
Patrona de Hondarribia, his September 8 feast is celebrated with the Alarde, a civics-military procession that commemorates the victory over the French troops in the siege of 1638, attributed to his intercession. Inside the Virgin is surrounded by models of ships and marine exvotes, a sign of a marine devotion.
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
