Origin and history

According to the tradition and local piety, in the place where today the Hejnice shrine is raised already from the Middle Ages there was a small Marian image venerated by peasants and travelers, to which special thanks and favors were attributed. This memory of an ancient chapel or chapel, located at the foot of the Jizera mountains, has for centuries nurtured the fame of the place as the intercession space of the Virgin for Czechs and Germans. The accounts of miracles linked to the image belong to the realm of popular devotion and do not contain with historical precision.

La documented history points out that in Hejnice there was a medieval Marian sanctuary, rebuilt and expanded in Baroque times. In the 18th century a large church and convent complex, associated with the Franciscan presence, was erected in the place, which consolidated Hejnice as one of the most significant pilgrimage centers in northern Bohemia. During the communist period, the religious life of the sanctuary was very limited, but after the fall of the regime there has been a renewed pastoral activity and regular pilgrimages.

The image and the sanctuary

The invocation focuses on a magen mataras venerated on the main altar of the Hejnice shrine. In the easily accessible sources, the exact type of image (if it is a wood size, painting or relief) or its detailed iconography; therefore, from a rigorous point of view, it can only be said that it is an image of the Virgin Mary venerated as a protector of the region. When local sources speak of "Panna María Hejnická" they refer precisely to this Marian representation, considered to be the object of special devotion.

The main sanctuary is the Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary in Hejnice (Basilica Visiting the Virgin Mary in Hejnice), predominantly baroque style, with a large joint convent. The complex is located at the foot of the Jizera mountains and is part of a well-known pilgrimage route in the Czech Republic. The church is recognized as minor basilica and works like pilgrimage sanctuary of regional and national importance, served pastoral in Franciscan key. The attached spaces are also used for spiritual retreats and ecclesial encounters.

Sponsorship and coronation

Our Lady of Hejnice is venerated as patrona local of the people of Hejnice and as a protector of the pilgrims who come to the sanctuary. Devotion transcends the strictly parochial realm, so that one can speak of a patronazgo regional on the north of Bohemia, with a strong presence of both Czech and German-speaking pilgrims. It is not clear from the sources consulted that she has been declared an official patron of a diocese or has a national patronage.

On the canonical coronation, there is no safe reference in the available documentation to a formal pontifical coronation of the image of Our Lady of Hejnice. Therefore, following the criterion of historical rigour, it should be indicated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation.

Party and devotion

The liturgical feast of the advocation is linked to the Visitation of the Virgin Marywhich is the official title of the basilica. In the general Roman calendar, this memory is celebrated 31 Mayand it is around that date that the main Marian celebrations and pilgrimages are organized in Hejnice. In addition, other thematic pilgrimages, retreats and group meetings are held throughout the year from different regions of the Czech Republic and neighbouring countries.

La devotion a Our Lady of Hejnice is especially expressed through walking pilgrimages, solemn Eucharistic celebrations and moments of personal prayer before the Marian image. The sanctuary has become a spiritual meeting point for Czechs and Germans, a symbol of reconciliation and unity in faith. There are no precise and recent figures of influx, but the official pilgrimage route of the Czech Republic includes Hejnice among its prominent destinations, indicating a significant presence of faithful each year.

Link to the Rosary

The available sources on the Hejnice shrine do not explicitly mention a particular relationship of this advocation with the prayer of the Rosary (for example, historical co-fradies of the Rosary specifically linked to the image or great "living rosaries" of the place). There is therefore no documented specific rosarian link.

However, as in most major Marian shrines in Central Europe, the Rosary It is a regular part of devotional life: pilgrims often integrate it into their processions, vigil and waiting times in the basilica, meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life from the hand of Mary. In the context of Our Lady of Hejnice, the Rosary helps to contemplate the Virgin as Mother who visits and accompanies (in line with the mystery of the Visitation), strengthening the faith, reconciliation and hope of those who come to this sanctuary at the foot of the Jizera mountains.

Documentary update: Hejnice, heritage and place of pilgrimage

The story of the temple published by the Hénice Monastery and the National Heritage Institute of the Czech Republic allow the description to be completed with documentary caution. The present complex is the result of several stages: medieval devotion gave way to enlargements, the Franciscan presence and the Baroque reconstruction of the 17th and 18th centuries; the sanctuary and its surroundings were declared a national cultural monument in 2018.

The tradition of the sick man and the image of the Virgin belongs to the foundational account of the place. The patrimonial documentation, on the other hand, attests to the temple, the cloister, its constructive history and its use as a space for pilgrimage and spiritual renewal. This tradition is not presented as an approved apparition, nor is a supernatural statement not made to the source.
