Origin and history

The sanctuary known today as Holy Hill, National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians (National Sanctuary of Mary, Help of Christians) is located near the town of Hubertus, in the state of Wisconsin (United States), within the archdiocese of Milwaukee. The hill was already identified in the 19th century as a place for contemplation and prayer, in an environment of forests and elevations that favoured spiritual recovery.

As regards documented originthe place was gaining importance as a site of Catholic pilgrimage throughout the second half of the 19th century, as the Catholic population of European origin in Wisconsin increased. The Carmelite barefoot parents took the pastoral care of the sanctuary in 1906. The present main temple, of Neorromanic style with two high twin towers, was built between 1926 and 1931, and the church was elevated to the dignity of minor basilica by Pope John Paul II in 2006. In 2006 it was also officially designated National Sanctuary under the title Mary Help of Christians by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops.

There is no tradition of Marian apparitions or extraordinary events that have given rise to this advocation in Holy Hill; it is rather a sanctuary of devotionwhere the advocation of Mary, Help of Christians - very widespread in the universal and liturgical Church held on May 24 - it was assumed as the main title of the place. No legendary accounts of this sanctuary have been found that have weight in local tradition beyond the assessment of the site as "holy mountain" and privileged place of prayer.

The image and the sanctuary

In Holy Hill venerates the Virgin under the title of Mary Help of Christians through various artistic representations, integrated into the architecture and altars of the sanctuary. It does not contain, in the accessible documentation, a single "miraculous" or special ancient image that concentrates devotion, as is the case in other sanctuaries; the advocation is expressed rather through the Marian iconographic set of the temple (paintings, windows, sculptures) dedicated to the Virgin as the Help of Christians. No secure data on material and a specific main image are available, so these details no constan.

The central temple has the official name of Basílica and National Shrine of Mary Help of Christians at Holy Hill. It is a church of Neorromanic style, with two high towers which dominate the landscape and make the sanctuary a visible point of reference from many kilometres to the round. It is built on a forest hill that reaches approximately 400 meters above sea level, forming part of the chain of kames hills of the region. The set includes the basilica, auxiliary chapels, a lookout, the station of the crucis and other spaces of pilgrimage and retreat. The sanctuary is attended by the barefoot Carmeliteswho live in the place and accompany the liturgical and devotional life.

Holy Hill is recognized as National Sanctuary United States and minor basilica within the Latin Catholic Church. It is considered the main Marian shrine in the state of Wisconsin and one of the most significant pilgrimage centers in the Middle West region.

Sponsorship and coronation

Holy Hill es, de hecho, el great Marian sanctuary of Wisconsinand the Virgin Mary, under the title of Help of Christiansis invoked as a special protector of those who pilgrim to this place. Although the sanctuary enjoys great recognition within the state and the archdiocese of Milwaukee, it is not known that there is a canonically proclaimed patronage (by decree of the Holy See) of Mary Help of the Christians of Holy Hill on the state of Wisconsin, or on the archdiocese, beyond its status as national and Marian sanctuary of reference. Therefore, any specific patronage no consta in official documents.

As for the canonical coronation of a particular image of Mary Help of Christians in Holy Hill, in the usual sources (sanctuary documentation, archdiocesan reviews, historical synthesis and coronation databases) does not contain a documented canonical coronation. If there is a local or devotional coronation not equal to pontifical canonical coronation, it is not clearly credited in accessible sources.

Party and devotion

La fiesta litúrgica de Mary Help of Christians in the Latin Catholic Church the May 24, a memory promoted especially from Pope Pius VII and spread by the Salesian tradition. In Holy Hill, this date is celebrated with particular solemnity, within the calendar of activities of the sanctuary, although the large influx of pilgrims is often especially concentrated in the months of best climate (spring and autumn) and on weekends.

Holy Hill receives every year tens of thousands of pilgrims and visitors, being an important pilgrimage destination in the Middle West of the United States. The pilgrimages include both parish groups and movements, religious communities, families and individual devotees. They are characteristic:

– La up to the hill y al mirador de la basílica como gesto penitencial y contemplativo. – La práctica del via crust en los senderos preparados en la colina. – La participación en la Eucharist y en la sacramental confession, highlighted in the pastoral of the sanctuary.

They do not contain, in verifiable sources, very specific popular traditions (such as mass processions with a specific image or certain unique promises) associated exclusively with Holy Hill, beyond the common practice of lighting candles, leaving written intentions and offering prayers for family, health and faith, in a context of Marian devotion sober and deeply liturgical.

Link to the Rosary

La advocación de Mary, Help of Christians is intimately linked in the tradition of the Church to Rosaryfrom the victory of Lepanto and the impulse given by Saint Pius V to Marian prayer as help in times of trial. Although the available information on Holy Hill contains no statutes or documents that highlight a practice of the unique or exclusive Rosary of the sanctuary, it is a stable part of the devotional life of the place, promoted by the Carmelites and very close to the pilgrimages.

In the absence of specific data on a "Rosary fellowship" of Holy Hill or particular obligations linked to the Rosary prayer in the sanctuary, it can be said that its link with the Rosary is inserted in the general practice of the Church: the Rosary is presented as way of contemplation of the mysteries of Christ with the eyes of Maryand, in this concrete advocation, as a plea entrusted to the Virgin who is just invoked as Help of Christians. In this way, the prayer of the Rosary in Holy Hill becomes a privileged way to unite personal devotion to the Church's itinerary, imploring the protection of Mary for the Christians of Wisconsin, the United States and the whole world.
