Main data
Origin and history
According to the traditionthe monastery of Panagia Hozoviótissa was founded to guard a Virgin's icon miraculously arrived from the Holy Land, specifically from the Hozova region (or Chozova), in Palestine or the Syrian-Palestinian coast. This tradition places the origin of the monastery between the centuries IX-XI, linking him to monks who would have fled the invasions and taken with him the holy image, who would have arrived by sea to Amorgós. These news is transmitted as a pious story and do not have detailed documentation of the time.
As for the documented history, various sources point out that the monastery is one of the oldest in Greece and that its current configuration dates back to the average Byzantine era, although there is no absolute unanimity on a specific date of foundation. What is firmly established is its continuity as a Greek Orthodox monastery to this day and its importance as a spiritual center of the island of Amorgós, where the Panagia Hozoviottissa is considered spiritual patron of the island. The monastery is quoted in modern guides and descriptions as the emblematic building of Amorgós, located about 2 km from Chora and attached to the rock about 300 m above the sea.
The image and the sanctuary
La image venerada es un Orthodox Marian icon, traditionally considered of Eastern origin and associated with the miraculous arrival from the Holy Land. The general sources on the monastery mention the existence of the "Holy Image" (an icon of the Virgin) that is the object of great veneration and that is moved in procession to the different localities of the island. However, in the sources consulted, the material, la pictorial technique ni una detailed iconographic description (exact type of Marian representation, gestures, disposition of the Child, etc.): such data are therefore not documented.
The sanctuary is the Monasterio de Panagia Hozoviotissa (in Greek, an Orthodox monastery dedicated to the Panagia, the Virgin Mary). It is literally attached to the almost vertical slope of the mountain, on the eastern coast of Amorgós, a 300 meters above sea level, and is accessible by a long step carved on the rock. The white building is raised in height attached to the cliff, with narrow corridors, small chapels and monastic cells, from which you can see wide views of the Aegean Sea. Available sources do not describe it as minor basilica or National sanctuary Catholic, bell like Orthodox monasteryTherefore, there is no canon title in the Catholic field (minor basilica, national or similar sanctuary).
Sponsorship and coronation
The Panagia Hozoviottissa is recognized as spiritual patron of the island of Amorgos. The devotion is not limited to the capital (Chora), but the Holy Image is carried in procession to the different peoples of the island each year, which reinforces its character as patronage over the entire island community.
In relation to a canonical coronation in the technical sense used by the Catholic Church for the icons or images of the Virgin, does not contain a documented canonical coronation. There is no reliable data on a pontifical decree or on the intervention of a papal delegate who has given such a coronation to this particular icon, which also belongs to the liturgical and disciplinary tradition of the Orthodox Church.
Party and devotion
La main party of the monastery and of the advocation is celebrated the November 21in the Orthodox Solemnity of the Presentation of the Virgin in the Temple (also known as "the Entries of the Virgin Mary"). On that day the monastery "comes to life," with an intense influx of faithful and pilgrims, liturgical celebrations and popular feast.
The devotion to the Panagia Hozoviottissa attracts not only the inhabitants of Amorgós, but also many pilgrims and visitors from other islands of the Cyclades (Anafi, Koufonisia, Heraklion, Naxos), who arrive on ships chartered especially for the occasion. A tradition pointed out by the sources is that the Santa Image de la Panagia es llevada every year to all the peoples of the island, which allows the faithful to venerate it closer to their homes and strengthens the ties of faith and local identity around this advocation. The monastery is also described as one of the great attractions of Amorgós, combining pilgrimage and cultural tourism, with demanding access to stairs and mountain roads.
Link to the Rosary
In the documentation consulted there is no specific and documented relationship between devotion to the Panagia Hozoviottissa and the prayer of the Rosary in the Latin Catholic sense. The spirituality of the monastery is mainly part of the tradition of prayer and liturgy orthodoxfocused on the veneration of icons, the celebration of the Divine Liturgy, the offices and prayer of Jesus, rather than on the Rosary as practiced in the Catholic Church.
However, from a Marian Catholic perspective, the Rosary can accompany this advocation spiritually and devotionally: by contemplating the mysteries of Christ with Mary, the faithful Catholic joins the veneration of the Panagia (Mother of God) that the Orthodox Church professes in this sanctuary. The icon of the Hozoviottissa, which recalls the Virgin's maternal closeness to the sea and the island, can inspire the meditative prayer of the Rosary, especially in the joyful and luminous mysteries, contemplating Mary as Theotokos (Mother of God) and safe guidance to reach Christ. Thus, even without a documented rosarian tradition of its own, the advocation of Panagia Hozoviottissa is deeply aligned with the Marian spirituality of the Rosary.
