Marian devotion
Our Lady of Itati
Mother of the Argentine coast
On the banks of the Paraná River, in Corrientes, the Virgin of Itati has been venerated since the time of the Franciscan missions among the Guarani. Its name, of Guaraní origin, means "stone tip."
From the Franciscan missions
The devotion dates back to the Franciscan evangelization of Parana in the 17th century. The historical sources place the presence of the image in the reduction of Itatí by 1615-1617, linked to missionary work among the Guarani. The popular tradition also speaks of a prodigious finding of the image by the river.
Marian focus of the northeast
During the 19th and 20th centuries, Itatí was consolidated as the main Marian center of the north-eastern Argentina, with great provincial and national pilgrimages. The image was canonically crowned on July 16, 1900, with the authorization of Pope Leo XIII, and the temple was declared a minor basilica in 1950.
