Main data
Origin and history
In the present town of Yazlivets (now in Ukraine, formerly part of the "eastern lands" of Poland) a strong devotion to the Madre de Dios de Jazłowiec (Mother of God Jazłowiec), closely linked to Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary (founded by Blessed Marcelina Darowska). This community established a house and school with great influence on Polish religious and patriotic life in the eastern lands; the presence of the Congregation and its Marian spirituality explain the arraigo of the advocation.
La documented history indicates that devotion is focused on a sculptural image of the Virgin made by the Polish sculptor Tadeusz Barącz (second half of the 19th century), first venerated at the Convent-College of the Sisters of the Immaculate in Jazłowiec. With the changes in borders and the persecution of the Second World War, the religious community and devotion moved to present Polish territory, particularly to Chimans, where the original image is preserved today.
As regards traditions or legendary elements, some Polish Catholic sources emphasize the special protection of the Virgin of Jazłowiec over Poland in times of war, and link the advocation with Mary's interventions in favour of Polish soldiers, especially during the period of interwar and during World War II. However, there are no recognized formal apparitions or specific miraculous accounts sufficiently documented in official sources; it is rather a spiritual tradition of maternal protection over the nation and its defenders. Where there is no explicit documentation, the criterion applies: no consta an officially recognized precise miraculous fact.
The image and the sanctuary
La image of Our Lady of Jazłowiec es una sculpture of the Virgin Mary Immaculate, of a markedly Marian style from the 19th century, work of the sculptor Tadeusz Barącz. It is a figure of Mary standing, with a serene and contemplative attitude, which refers to the classic icon of the Immaculate Conception: The young, simple Virgin, with her face turned slightly down, inviting prayer and trust. The material of the sculpture (stone or light marble) and its artistic production make it a much appreciated piece in the Polish devotional heritage; however, no consta in easily accessible sources an exhaustive technical-artistic description (exact dimensions, precise type of stone, etc.), so it is appropriate to keep the prudence in these details.
El original sanctuary was the spiritual environment of collegio-convent of the Sisters of the Immaculate in Jazłowiecwhich worked as a center of teaching and religious life, with its church and chapel dedicated to the Immaculate. After the war and the change of borders, the Congregation moved the original image to Szymanów (Poland), where today it is venerated in the casa generalicia of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, which acts de facto as new sanctuary of the Mother of God of Jazłowiec.
It is not known that the church where the image is currently venerated has been elevated to minor basilica and that there is an official title of National sanctuary; devotion has rather the character of a congregational sanctuary and place of Marian pilgrimage linked to the spiritual family of the Sisters and to the historical memory of the ancient eastern Polish lands. If there is a canonical erection like diocesan sanctuaryis not clearly documented in the general sources consulted, so it is strictly stated: no consta.
Sponsorship and coronation
Our Lady of Jazłowiec has a particular relationship with the Polish armyespecially with Old Polish Cavalry, including Ulans (ulans of Jazłowiec and other cavalry units) who venerated it as Pattern and Protector. This castrense dimension of devotion was especially rooted between the two world wars and remained in the memory of the veterans and their families, who came to the Virgin of Jazłowiec to entrust the homeland and its defenders.
At the broad territorial level (city, diocese or nation) no consta In general sources an official proclamation of canonical patronage of Our Lady of Jazłowiec over a diocese or over all Poland. It can be said that a actual spiritual patronage on certain formations of the Polish army and on the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception, but without a decree of chief patron of an ecclesiastical constituency that is clearly documented.
As for the canonical coronation, it is known that numerous Polish Marian images were crowned with papal crowns, especially in the 19th and 20th centuries. However, in the specific case of Madre de Dios de Jazłowiec, accessible sources (including online Marian documentation and historical summaries) in safe ofrecen datos on a canonical coronation officially decreed by the Holy See or performed on its behalf. Therefore, following the rule of historical rigour:
Canon coronation: there is no documented canon coronation.
Party and devotion
La own party of Our Lady of Jazłowiec, in the context of the Congregation of the Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and of the devotion linked to the sanctuary, is not clearly fixed in the general sources consulted. Many calls of the Immaculate in Poland celebrate their main solemnity around the 8 December (Immaculate Conception) or local Marian parties, but for this specific advocation no consta a universally established and widely documented liturgical date.
La devotion is expressed above all in:
– Peregrinaciones de fieles a Chimans, donde se conserva la imagen original. – La oración confiada de antiguas formaciones militares y de sus familias, que invocan a la Virgen como in combat and in the difficulties of the nation. – La memoria de la antigua casa de Jazłowiec en las actuales tierras ucranianas, que muchos polacos consideran un lugar de fuerte carga espiritual e histórica, aunque hoy la presencia católica polaca allí sea mucho más reducida.
As for flow figures, no constant numerical dates verifiables (annual number of pilgrims, etc.) in easily accessible sources; it can be said that this is a devotion rather than a and linked to specific environments (religious congregation, military world, memory of the kresy - old oriental borders -) rather than a great national Marian sanctuary like Jasna Góra in Częstochowa.
Link to the Rosary
The sources consulted about Our Lady of Jazłowiec do not explicitly mention a particular link of this advocation with the prayer of Rosary (for example, a specific Rosary fellowship, promises linked to this prayer or apparitions that recommend it in a special way). Therefore, with historical rigour, it must be stated: no consta a specific and documented link between this advocation and the Rosary.
However, being linked to the Immaculate Conception and to the spiritual life of a Marian congregation, devotion to the Mother of God of Jazłowiec is naturally inserted into the great Marian tradition of the Church, in which the Rosary It occupies a privileged place. In practice:
– El Rosario acompaña la vida cotidiana de las Sisters of the Immaculate Conception and of the faithful who come to the sanctuary or to the house of Szymanów, as a simple and perseverant way
