Marian devotion
Our Lady of Juquila
The Little Immaculate of Oaxaca
A tiny image of the Immaculate, darkened by a fire from which he was unharmed, brings together in Oaxaca crowds of pilgrims who walk whole days to entrust themselves to "the Juquilita."
Origin and history
The image is a small size of the Immaculate arrival in the 16th century from Spain, entrusted to a Dominican friar who left it to the indigenous Juan del Valle in Amialtepec; from there devotion was spread. A fire consumed the house, but the image was miraculously unharmed, with the face and hands darkened by fire, a sign - for the faithful - of its closeness to the poor.
The image then moved to Santa Catarina Juquila, where the sanctuary was raised which became a center of mass pilgrimage, first regional and then national. Many pilgrims walk long distances. In 2014, Pope Francis granted his canonical coronation.
