Origin and history
According to the traditionthe story of Our Lady of Kodeń is linked to the Polish noble Santa SapiehaLord of those lands, who would have pilgrimaged to Rome moved by a grave disease. After praying long before an ancient Marian icon venerated there, he received a miraculous healing, according to his story. Impressed by this favor, he would have managed to bring that image to Poland, entering it in Kodeń as a precious family treasure and then as a center of regional devotion. This legendary core underlines the dimension of grace, healing and choice associated with the Virgin of Kodeń, rather than offering a verifiable historical chronicle.
As for the documented historythe sources point out that the veneration of the image of Our Lady of Kodeń was consolidated from the 17th century, linked to the Sapieha family and the development of the Marian sanctuary in the town. The cult was growing to make Kodeń an important pilgrimage center for eastern Poland. During the partitions of Poland and the religious tensions of the 19th century, the Virgin of Kodeń was again at the centre of the country's history, especially in the context of the forced suppression of Latin and Greek-Catholic Catholic structures in that area. The figure of the Virgin of Kodeń was thus associated, in historical memory, with the Polish Catholic Identity and the defence of unity of faith in a territory marked by political and confessional divisions.
The image and the sanctuary
The image of Our Lady of Kodeń is a Marian icon of oriental style, venerated as a miraculous image. It's known as Mother of Boża Kodeńskaand is usually represented with features specific to the icons of the Mother of God, in the attitude of presenting the Son and interceding for the people. The original is an icon painted on a table (wood), framed and richly decorated; it is the object of particular veneration and, according to local piety, is considered to be the bearer of many spiritual favors and thanks. In popular devotion it is acclaimed as “Reina de Podlasia” y "Mother of Unity", titles that highlight both their regional roots and their spiritual role of reconciliation.
The icon is venerated in the Basilica- Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kodeń (often also called the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Kodeń or Kodeńska), in the diocese of Siedlcein eastern Poland, within the current voivodship of Lublin. This sanctuary is recognized as the the main Marian sanctuary of the diocese of Siedlce. It is entrusted to the Congregation of Missionary Oblates of Mary Immaculatewho attend the pastoral care of the pilgrims and the custody of the icon. The temple has received the title of minor basilicaand around it has developed a complex of welcome to pilgrims, with spaces of prayer and devotions in the open air, which reinforce the character of Kodeń as a place of spiritual encounter and reconciliation.
Sponsorship and coronation
Our Lady of Kodeń is venerated as Queen of Podlasia (historical region of eastern Poland) and as Mother of Unity, patrona espiritual de la diócesis de Siedlce and reference sanctuary for large areas of the eastern border of the country. The sanctuary has become a sign of Marian identity for the Catholics of that region, with an irradiation that exceeds the local level.
The image was coronada en 1723, according to tradition and local devotional memory. The available sources indicate that year as the date of coronation, but is not certainin the sources consulted, the detailed documentation of a pontifical canonical coronation (with precise indication of the Pope or the delegate and formalized act in Rome). Accordingly, following the criterion of historical rigour requested: does not contain a documented canonical coronation in the current strict legal terms, although the coronation of 1723 is a firm part of the history and devout consciousness of the sanctuary.
Party and devotion
The main feast of Our Lady of Kodeń is held August 15, coinciding with the solemnity of the Assumption of the Virgin Marythe date on which the pilgrimages and liturgical celebrations are intensified in the sanctuary. This day, the image of the Virgin is especially honored as Queen of heaven and Queen of Podlasiaand the consecration of communities and families under their mother's care is renewed.
The Shrine of Kodeń receives numerous pilgrimages throughout the year, with special inflow in summer and around the great Marian parties. It is an important point of walking pilgrimages from different parishes in the diocese of Siedlce and other border regions. Devotion is characterized by confidence in the intercession of the Virgin for reconciliation and unityin both families and between different communities and rites (Latin and Eastern), in an area historically marked by the coexistence of various Christian traditions. Among the popular practices are the confessions, participation in the Eucharist, the novies and Marian vigil, as well as the personal and family consecration to the Mother of Unity.
Link to the Rosary
In the sources consulted about Our Lady of Kodeń no consta a specific historical relationship or a particular message of this advocation explicitly linked to the prayer of the Rosaryas in other Marian shrines. For example, there is no specific apparition or promise linked to the practice of the Rosary.
However, in the spiritual life of the sanctuary, the Rosary occupies a central place as Marian prayer par excellence and as a concrete expression of trust in the Mother of Unity. The Rosary, by meditating on the mysteries of Christ next to Mary, becomes a school of internal unity and reconciliationin full harmony with the titles attributed to the Virgin: Queen of Podlasia and Mother of Unity. In prayer before the icon of Kodeń, the Rosary helps the faithful to contemplate the face of Christ with the eyes of Mary, to ask for the grace of the unity of the Church and peace between people and peoples, and to live the historical and personal trials with the same confident faith that encouraged the generations who came to this sanctuary in times of division and suffering.

Documentary update: Kodeń and the distinction between history and tradition
Our Lady of Kodeń, Queen of Podlasia and Mother of Unity, is to be seen at the basilic--shrine of Santa Ana, in Kodeń. The diocese of Siedlce includes Kodeń among its shrines, and the mapping record of OpenStreetMap identifies the building of the basilica (way 258318298). This check supports the existence of the place of worship and its location; it does not make all the episodes transmitted on the origin of the image a proven history.
The tradition relates the image to Mikołaj Sapieha and a visit to Rome in the 17th century. The later stories tell that the image was taken to Kodeń and that the protagonist obtained the pontifical forgiveness. These details remain in the context of the Hagiographical tradition as long as each episode is not confronted with direct Roman documentation. The institutional history that can be exposed is the continuity of public veneration, the pontifical coronation of 1723, the banishment of the image during the Tsarist repressions and its return to Kodeń in the 20th century, according to the historical synthesis used for this research.
The coronation of an image recognizes the arraigo of the cult and does not automatically approve of a legend, an apparition or each given healing. This is why the state of this document describes the permitted Catholic cult and the crowned image, leaving "no record" where a specific pronunciation has not been located. The return of the image can be narrated as part of the historical memory of local Catholicism without stating that each devotional interpretation has the same degree of documentation.
The prayer of intercession may ask Mary to accompany families, pilgrims and those who suffer persecution, directing the supplication to God through Christ. The image and the sanctuary serve the life of faith; they are not objects of worship.
