Main data
Origin and history
The monastery of Kovilje is an ancient Serbian Orthodox cenobium, located in the mountains near Ivanjica, in central Serbia, and is dedicated to the Mother of God (Bogorodica); venerated advocation is often simply designated as Our Lady of Kovilje (Bogorodica of Kovilje).[ ]
Tradition / legend: The local monastic tradition, repeated in guides and descriptions of the Serbian religious heritage, attributes the foundation of the monastery to san Sava de Serbia, the first Serbian archbishop († 1236), considered an organizer of numerous monasteries in medieval Serbia. [] However, this attribution is based on devotional memory and not on contemporary documents.
Documented history: The historical studies agree that Kovilje is a monastery of medieval origin, but the older written sources are after the time of Saint Sava; its existence as an active monastery in Ottoman times, with various phases of boom and decline, looting and restorations. [] During the XX-XX centuries the monastery was largely unpopulated and impoverished, being subject to recent restorations, so that today it is considered a male monastery in restorationthe Serbian Orthodox Church. [] It does not contain, in the accessible documentation, an exact date of foundation or a direct legal relationship with some Catholic diocese, since it is a strictly central orthodox.
The image and the sanctuary
La advocación de Our Lady of Kovilje is attached to monasterio de Koviljewhose main temple is dedicated to the Mother of God (Bogorodica).[ ]
The image: In the Serbian Orthodox sphere Marian veneration is expressed mainly through iconos. In the case of Kovilje, available sources mention the existence of icons of the Mother of God, but does not contain, in easily accessible documents, a detailed and unique description of a Marian icon that functions as a "main" image with specific iconography (type Hodigitria, Eleusa, etc.), or its material, author or exact date. [] In the absence of data, it can only be said rigorously that devotion focuses on the Marian icons of the monastery church, Byzantine-Slavic style, as usual in the region.
The sanctuary / temple: The monastery is presented in the sources as “Monasterio de Kovilje”, Orthodox monastery in a mountainous and wooded area, near Ivanjica, in central Serbia. [] It is a relatively small set, with stone church and adjacent monastic dependencies, rebuilt or restored in recent times after periods of abandonment and ruin. [] It is not known that the temple has the title of minor basilicaor that it is formally recognized as Nacional or diocesan sanctuary in the Catholic field; its character is that of a traditional Orthodox monastery with religious and cultural importance in the region.
Sponsorship and coronation
Patronage: The Marian advocation venerated in Kovilje is, in practice, patron of the monastery itself and its local environment. It is not known that Our Lady of Kovilje has been officially proclaimed. patron of the Serbian nation, of a Catholic diocese or of a city by Catholic canonical decree; its irradiation belongs to the Iglesia Ortodoxa Serbia and the popular piety of the area. []
Canon coronation: It does not contain in Catholic or Orthodox sources of easy verification that the icon or the advocation of Our Lady of Kovilje have received a canonical coronation in Latin mode (with decree of the Holy See or by papal mandate) neither a comparable official coronation in the orthodox field which is clearly documented in accessible language. Therefore, following the requested criterion:
does not contain a documented canonical coronation.
Party and devotion
In Orthodox tradition, monasteries dedicated to the Mother of God often celebrate in a special way some of the big Marian parties of the Byzantine calendar: Nativity of the Mother of God (8 September), Presentation in the Temple (21 November), Annunciation (25 March) or Sleep (15 August). For Kovilje, the sources consulted do not offer with certainty which of these dates is the fiesta principal propiaor if there is a day of pilgrimage specifically called "The Feast of Our Lady of Kovilje." No consta, therefore, a unique, clearly documented holiday date.
It is noted that the monastery is place of pilgrimage and retreat for Serbian Orthodox faithful, especially in the great feasts of the Mother of God and in times of fasting, when the pilgrims come to the Divine Liturgy, to the confession and veneration of the holy icons. [] The influx is remarkable in summer and in the main solemnities, but no official figures of pilgrims in the sources consulted.
All this forms a place where the Mother of God is felt as close protection of the monks and the faithful of the region.
Link to the Rosary
The documentation available does not contain a specific historical relationship between the advocation of Our Lady of Kovilje and the prayer of Rosary in the Latin sense (crown of mysteries in the style of Roman Catholic tradition). The monastery belongs to the Iglesia Ortodoxa Serbia, whose Marian practice is expressed above all by the iconos, hymns (especially Akathistos to the Mother of God) and the prayer of Jesus, rather than through the Rosary as known in the West. []
However, from a Catholic Marian perspective, it is possible to contemplate Our Lady of Kovilje en profunda sintonía espiritual con el Rosario: – el Rosario permite meditar los mysteries of Christ's life with Mary, and the Bogorodica venerada en Kovilje es precisamente la Madre de Dios que introduce en el misterio de la Encarnación, la Cruz y la Resurrección; – la repetición del Hail Mary unites the faithful internally with the same Mother of God honored in the Orthodox icons, so that the Rosary can be a bridge of spiritual intercession and communion for the unity of Christians and for the sanctification of peoples of Orthodox tradition.
So, even without a direct historical link, the prayer of Rosary It can accompany devotion to Our Lady of Kovilje as a very proper form of Catholic spirituality to join the Mother of God venerated in this ancient Serbian monastery, asking for the monks, pilgrims and the Church that prays in the East and West.
