Main data
Origin and history
According to the local traditionthe Marian icon of Krzeszów comes from the early times of the Christianization of the region and would have been brought by the monks as a special gift of the Virgin for this valley of Silesia, being soon considered miraculous image and object of continuous veneration. Beyond this pious background, legendary versions of possible specific authors or detailed paths before reaching Krzeszów are not documented.
As for the documented historythe tourist and ecclesial sources of the region point out that the painting of the Virgin of Krzeszów is a work of 13th century, and they explicitly describe it as "the oldest Marian painting in Poland." The image is kept in the complex of the ancient Cistercian abbey (then Benedictine and today postcistercian) of Krzeszów, in the current Lower Silesia. The monastic set, also known as "baroque pearl," developed especially in the 17th-18th centuries, when the present basilica of the Assumption was raised and the character of the place was consolidated as an important center of Marian pilgrimages.
After the political and ecclesial transformations of Silesia, the sanctuary has remained an important focus of Marian devotion, incorporated today in the diocese of Legnica, of which the Virgin of Grace of Krzeszów is recognized as patron.
The image and the sanctuary
The main treasure of the sanctuary is the imagen de la Virgen de Krzeszów, identified in the sources as a Marian icon of 13th century. It is a painting on table (icon), of an ancient Marian type, linked to the tradition of the images of grace; the sources consulted emphasize their antiquity and miraculous character, but do not detail with precision the iconographic style (position of the Child, gesture of the Mother, etc.), nor the exact technique, so these aspects do not show with safety.
The image is venerated in the Basilica of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Basilica of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary), which is part of the of Krzeszó w (Post-Cyster Abbey in Krzeszów). This set includes the basilica, annexed churches, chapels of the "Kalwaria," mausoleum of the Piastas and other monastic buildings, and is known as a "baroque pearl" for the richness of its architecture and decoration. The basilica is listed as one of the most important Baroque monuments of Baja Silesia; the sources consulted in Spanish and Polish do not clearly specify its canon title (minor basilica) or the official rank of the sanctuary (diocesan or national), so these details no constan explicitly in the revised documentation.
Sponsorship and coronation
The official tourism sources of Baja Silesia present to the Virgin of Krzeszó w as the greatest spiritual treasure of the post-cistercian abbey and point out that the icon was crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1997. This coronation, carried out in the context of the tradition of pontifical coronations of Marian images in Poland, is considered a canonical coronation expressly attributed to John Paul II; the regional source indicates: "crowned by Pope John Paul II in 1997."
As regards patronazgothe same source mentions that it is the oldest Marian painting of Poland and the main treasure of the sanctuary, but does not directly explain the legal title of patron of the diocese. However, the Our Lady of Grace of Krzeszó w is recognized in contemporary ecclesial life as patron of the diocese of Legnica, reality mentioned in diocesan documentation and in the presentation of the sanctuary (known data of the present ecclesial praxis; the pages consulted in this search, however, do not explicitly detail it, so it is indicated without specific date of proclamation). In the case of broader civil patronage (city, region or nation), in the sources examined no consta an additional title similar to that of other great Polish national sanctuaries.
Party and devotion
The main party of the Virgen de Gracia de Krzeszów is celebrated around the solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, August 15in line with the title of the basilica and the local Marian tradition. This data corresponds to the usual liturgical practice of the sanctuaries who bear the title of the Assumption; the tourist and outreach pages on Krzeszów focus more on the artistic heritage and do not detail the liturgical calendar itself, so they do not contain figures or extensive descriptions of the feast beyond the general reference to the Assumption.
The Krzeszów complex is described as a receiving place pilgrims and visitors from various parts of Poland and abroaddrawn both by devotion to the Virgin and by the artistic value of the Baroque whole. The guided tours, the possibility of walking the basilica, chapels, church of San José and mausoleum of the Piastas, as well as the wide opening hours, show a stable flow of pilgrims and tourists. However, no constan in the sources consulted accurate quantitative data on the annual number of pilgrims or detailed descriptions of specific popular traditions (specific processions, unique rites), beyond the general mention of their character as an important Marian sanctuary in the region.
Link to the Rosary
In the accessible documentation on the Krzeszów shrine and on the Virgin of Grace there is no specific and documented relationship between this vocation and particular practices of Rosary (for example, historical co-fradies of the Rosary specifically linked to the image, promises or apparitions related to this prayer). In this regard, no consta a rosarian bond of its own comparable to that of other Marian shrines where the Rosary is the explicit axis of devotion.
However, since it is a Pedestrian marijuana in the liturgy of the Church, it is consistent that the prayer of the Rosary It is part of the ordinary piety of the faithful and of the pilgrimages: as in so many shrines, the mysteries of the Rosary allow us to contemplate, together with Mary, the life of Christ, and to join in the intercession of the Virgin of Krzeszów, Mother of Grace. In particular, the feast of August 15 offers a privileged framework for meditating on the glorious mysteries and, in a special way, the Assumption of Mary, the holder of the basilica where the ancient icon of the Virgin of Grace is kept.
