Marian devotion
Santa María la Real de la Almudena
Patron Saint of Madrid

Our Lady of Almudena is the patron saint of Madrid. As documented history shows, Marian devotion in the area of the Alcázar and the city walls dates back to the Middle Ages; the existence of an image and a cult in the old parish church of Santa María, next to the Moorish wall, is already attested. According to pious tradition, the original image was hidden in the wall in the 8th century, during the Muslim invasion, and miraculously found in the 11th century, when Alfonso VI reconquered Madrid. The image is said to have appeared when part of the wall collapsed, among stones and with a lit lamp, in a granary or almudayna, from which the name is derived. This narrative is pious and traditional, without contemporary documentary evidence of the events.

The image and the sanctuary
The main image is venerated in the Cathedral of Santa María la Real de la Almudena, seat of the Archdiocese of Madrid. A pious tradition, often repeated in Madrid catechism, states that when the section of the wall where the image was hidden fell, the Virgin appeared intact, with two candles still burning at her sides, a sign of continuous protection over the city; it has become a symbol of Mary's presence in the history of Madrid.
Patronage and coronation
She is the main patron saint of the city of Madrid, with a patronage consolidated from the 17th century and officially recognized in the 20th century; the bull of patronage was confirmed by Pius XII in 1948. The canonical coronation took place on November 10, 1948, in the Plaza de Oriente.
