Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Arrixaca
Former patron of the Kingdom of Murcia · Spain
The oldest Marian advocation of Murcia: a small size of the 13th century that King Alfonso X the Wise chose as patron of the Kingdom, a living memory of the Christian roots of the region.
Origin and history
The image is a Gothic size of polychrome walnut, of anonymous author, dated in the 13th century; it takes its name from the Arrabal de la Arrixaca, from Arabic al-Rasc. After Murcia's incorporation into the Crown of Castilla, devotion was quickly consolidated: King Alfonso X the Wise, of great Marian piety, declared her patron of the Kingdom of Murcia and of the city.
From the XVII-XVIII centuries, devotion to the Virgin of Fuensana was gaining prominence until being recognized as patron of the city (ratification in 1955). La Arrixaca retained its historical title as patron of the Kingdom of Murcia and today it is venerated as a founding title of the region, declared Good of Cultural Interest in 2012.
