San Cristóbal, catedral de Canberra

The Canberra Cathedral is not dedicated to the Assumption, but to San Cristóbal, the patron of the travelers, a title deliberately chosen because Canberra - whose name means "meeting place" - is a city to which pilgrims come from all over the world. Founded as a parish in 1928, it became a cathedral of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn in 1973 after an expansion that doubled its capacity to the thousand faithful. Its Spanish Romanesque style, the work of the architect Clement Glancy, and its 30-foot bell make it one of the most emblematic temples in the Australian capital.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The first stone was put on 8 May 1938 by Archbishop Gilroy of Sydney, with the presence of Prime Minister Joseph Lyons, the first Australian Catholic to take up this position.
  • The dedication to St. Christopher was a symbolic gesture: Canberra, "meeting place" in the Aboriginal language, would always receive travelers, and the protective pattern of the walkers should guard that door.
  • The building has been included in the Australian Capital Territory Heritage Register since 1998, recognized for its architectural and historical value for the young federal capital.
San Cristóbal

Feast: July 25 · Place: Cathedral of San Cristóbal, district of Manuka (Forrest), Canberra, Australia

The Cathedral of San Cristóbal, in the district of Manuka, is the seat of the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn and the main place of Catholic veneration in the capital of Australia. Built between 1938 and 1939 in Spanish Romanesque style, it was extended in 1973 to double its capacity. Although the search key pointed to a Marian advocation of the Assumption, the temple is not dedicated to the Virgin under that title, but to Saint Christopher, the pattern of the travelers, a symbol of a city which is, by its very nature, a meeting point.

In order to serve the common good, Saint Christopher, the guardian of the walkers, intercedes for those who come to Canberra, and guide us all on the paths of justice and peace.
