Our Lady of the Assumption
Jumilla Patron (Murcia)
"Queen of Jumilla" for more than five centuries, Our Lady of the Assumption is the patron of the city, celebrated every 15 August with the reclaimed representation of the sacramental self of her Mystery.
Origin and history
After the reconquest of Jumilla (1241), the patron was Santa Maria de Gracia until about 1500; in the 16th century the patron was named the Virgin of the Assumption, popularly known as "Lady of August." Between 1610 and 1634 his fellowship was already documented. The image of the Dormition or Transit of Mary moved in 1940 to the hermitage of Saint Augustine, a temple of the 16th century.
At the end of the 19th century the old fair moved to August to coincide with the patron's parties. Every 15 August mass and procession are held, and the representation of the sacramental self of the Mystery of the Assumption, a Baroque tradition that has not been staged for centuries, has been restored. The image is venerated as "crowned."
The year of canonical coronation is not accurately recorded in the (recent) sources.
