Cathedral of the Assumption of Majuro, Marshall Islands

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Majuro is the mother church of Catholicism in the Marshall Islands and the seat of the Apostolic Prefecture created in 1993 by John Paul II. Its origin dates back to 1898, when the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart arrived at the atoll of Majuro to begin the evangelization of the archipelago. Simple in its form but rich in fervor, it celebrates the Assumption of Mary on August 15 with Masses in the Marshali language and songs of Polynesia tradition that express the deep faith of the island people.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • The Missionaries of the Sacred Heart (MSC) established the first Catholic mission in the atoll of Majuro in 1898; the cathedral, raised on the same foundational site, has been the sacramental heart of the Marshall Islands for over a century.
  • On April 23, 1993, John Paul II erected the Apostolic Prefecture of the Marshall Islands, separating it from the Diocese of Carolines, with jurisdiction over the entire republic and the American atoll of Wake; the Cathedral of the Assumption was confirmed as a host church.
  • The Assumption of Mary on August 15 is lived in Majuro with masses in Marshales and dance of sticks, fusion of the Latin liturgy with the micronesia culture that expresses the deep-rooted Marian devotion of the atoll.
  • The cathedral floor features a design of circles inscribed in squares in living colors that reproduces decorative motifs of local handicrafts; the simple architecture of micronesian design contrasts with the solemnity of the celebrations that fill it.
  • The rise in sea level represents the greatest existential threat to Majuro and his Catholic community; the Church actively participates in Caritas Oceania to support the climate resilience of a people whose land could disappear under the water in a few decades.
Our Lady of the Assumption

Feast: August 15 · Place: Delap-Uliga-Djarrit, atoll of Majuro, Republic of the Marshall Islands

The Cathedral of the Assumption of Majuro is the center of Catholic life in the Marshall Islands, a central Pacific coral archipelago that faces the challenge of climate change with a deeply Marian faith. Founded by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in 1898, it became a cathedral of the newly erected Apostolic Prefecture in 1993. His faithful celebrate the Virgin of the Assumption every August 15 with marshalese songs that resonate in the small temple of micronesian design, raising to heaven the prayer of a small people in number but great in faith.

"Our Lady of the Assumption, Queen of the Pacific, watch over the sons and daughters of these coral islands threatened by the waters of the sea; intercede for them before your Son that they may never lack a firm land to live, believe and love.
