La Cathedral of Our Lady of the Candelaria of Mayagüez was erected as the first Catholic church of the town 1760, as recorded in the archives of the city of San Germán. From that initial parish temple the ecclesial presence in the village was consolidated, which would eventually become of great importance in the western region of Puerto Rico.
With the creation of Diocese of Mayagüez in the 20th century (the diocese was erected by Paul VI in 1976, a fact known by ecclesiastical historiography although not detailed in the sources cited), the parish church was elevated to catedralthe Virgin of the Candelaria as head of the diocese and patron of the city. The temple is located at the eastern end of the Plaza Colónin front of the city hall, and has become a religious and urban symbol of Mayagüez.
Over the centuries, the building has undergone expansions and restorations, eventually becoming the current cathedral, which the diocese presents as the region's main Marian temple dedicated to Our Lady of Candelaria. The devotion has remained strong and has influenced the festive calendar and the Catholic identity of the municipality.
### Tradition and undocumented elements
As in many claims of the Candelaria, it is common in the Spanish sphere to relate devotion to the tradition of Purification of the Virgin and the Presentation of the Lord in the temple (February 2) and, in some places, with ancient ways of blessing candles and processions of light. However, for Mayagüez they do not contain, in the sources consulted, legendary accounts of apparitions, miraculous findings of the image or prodigious transfers from other territories.
Nor is the moment or circumstances in which a specific image of the Candelaria, possibly of Canary originI would have arrived at the temple of Mayagüez. The local sources consulted focus on the history of the building and on the current devotion, but no consignan a detailed Marian foundational account.
