Our Lady of Charity
Patrona de Cartagena (Murcia)
The popular patron of Cartagena, Our Lady of Charity, was sold in its Royal Basilica; it was the first image of the diocese of Cartagena canonically crowned, in 1923.
Origin and history
The current image came to Cartagena in 1723 from Naples, entrusted to the sculptor Giacomo Colombo for the Hospital of Charity; the devotional tradition adds that when disembarking the cargo the image was discovered prodigious. The basilica is related to the ancient work of the Hospital of Charity, with a background in the 16th century and a congregation documented in 1718.
Although the recognized historical patron was the Virgin of Rosell, Charity became a patron in fact for the very intense popular devotion. It was crowned canonically in 1923, the first crowned image of the diocese of Cartagena, a milestone of great importance in the city.
