Our Lady of Tape
The Virgin of Colón
On the head of the Conquer, dominating the marshes of the Odiel, the hermitage of Our Lady of the Cinta guards the patron of Huelva, before which - according to tradition - Christopher Columbus held a vote on the return of his first trip to America.
Origin and history
The sanctuary is a Gothic-Mudejar temple from the 15th century, and devotion goes back to that same time, in the middle of the seafaring boom of Huelva. The tradition tells us that the Virgin appeared to a shoemaker suffering from pain and gave her the "tape" of her waist to heal it, origin of the title and the symbol of the tape as protection. According to the Colombian tradition, Columbus went to the sanctuary on March 3, 1493 to fulfill a vote made in a storm.
The current image was commissioned in 1616 and enthroned in the merchant temple of Huelva in 1618. Canonically proclaimed patron of the city by bull of Paul VI in 1964, Mayor Perpetua since 1956, was canonically crowned on September 26, 1992.
