Marian devotion
Our Lady of Tape
Mare de Déu de la Cinta · Patrona de Tortosa
The devotion to the Virgin of the Cinta is born from an ancient Tortosian tradition: the Virgin would have given a tape as a sign of her protection over the city and its inhabitants.
Origin and history
The tradition counts the delivery of a tape by the Virgin as a pledge of protection for Tortosa. From this account was born the advocation of the Mare de Déu de la Cinta, and the "social tape" became the object of special veneration and symbol of the city.
Devotion grew with the creation of cofradies and the erection of chapels and sanctuary. The recognition as a patron of Tortosa and the canonical coronation of 1923 consolidated the Virgin of the Cinta as a sign of the religious and cultural identity of the city.
