Origin and history

Our Lady of the Southern Cross Our Lady of the Southern Cross is a Marian title of a devotional character linked to Australia. It applies to the Virgin Mary the symbol of constellation of the South Cross, very visible in the skies of the southern hemisphere and present in flags and patriarchal symbols: as that constellation guided the navigators of the south, so Mary is seen as a guide to Christ.

The documented history of devotional tradition should be clearly distinguished. The documented thing is that Australia's main patron is Mary Help of Christians, proclamada según fuentes de divulgación católica en 1844.

It is important to stress that this vocation is devotional and not born of an apparition. A Catholic article expressly points out that it has no extraordinary associated apparitions or phenomena, nor notable cures in the way of Lourdes or Fatima. In Oceania, moreover, there is no Marian apparition approved as supernatural by the Church.

The image and the sanctuary

The iconography, when it appears, associates Mary with the star or the signal that guides, in analogy with the starry cross that guides the sailors of the southern hemisphere. It is therefore an advocation of strong symbolic and catechetical content, not a cult centered on a prodigious image.

Sponsorship and coronation

It does not contain a canonical coronation of an image under the title of Our Lady of the South Cross, neither a pontifical or diocesan decree specific to this advocation.

Party and devotion

Link to the Rosary

There is no specific tradition of the Rosary in the consulted sources, linked in a canonical way to the title of Our Lady of the South Cross, nor is there a fellowship of its own.

From a mariological perspective, however, the symbolism of this advocation is naturally linked with the sense of the Rosary. If the South Cross guides the navigator on the southern night, the Rosary is the prayer by which the Christian, from the hand of Mary, is directed towards Christ by meditating on the mysteries of his life. Thus, the image of Mary as a driving star - so present in this Australian devotion - finds in the Rosary a concrete channel of prayer, even if the link is spiritual and catechetical and is not fixed in a specific document.
