Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Guard
Protector of Genoa
On Mount Figogna, which watches Genoa, the Virgin of the Guard has been venerated since the 15th century. Genoese sailors and emigrants carried their devotion to the world.
The apparition of 1490
The devotion dates back to the apparition of the Virgin on Mount Figogna on August 29, 1490 to the peasant Benedetto Pareto, who was asked to rise a chapel in that place. After the early doubts of the seer, a healing in his family confirmed the message and encouraged the community to build the first chapel.
Over time the place became a sanctuary, expanded by the growing influx of pilgrims from Genoa and other regions. The devotion, encouraged by the Genoese bishops, was especially accompanied by sailors and migrants, who spread it in other countries.
