Marian devotion
The Immaculate Conception is part of the Catholic faith and liturgy lived in Colombo, but the main archdiocesan temple is dedicated to Saint Lucia. This fact sheet preserves the historical route announced and expressly corrects confusion so as not to turn universal devotion into a non-existent architectural dedication.
What is documented
The Archdiocese of Colombo identifies its headquarters and pastoral activity in the capital of Sri Lanka. Its cathedral is St. Lucia's Cathedral, in Kotahena. The official website of the cathedral itself confirms the dedication to Saint Lucia, a virgin and martyr, and its role as a church of cathedralicia. It is therefore not correct to present it as "cathedral of the Immaculate Conception."
The Immaculate Conception in the Church of Colombo
Faith in Mary conceived without original sin belongs to the doctrinal and liturgical heritage of the entire Catholic Church. In Colombo it is celebrated within the ordinary life of parishes, communities and families. This statement does not require the invention of an exclusive local image, coronation, archdiocesan patronage or a specific procession that the official sources consulted do not prove.
History and tradition
The verifiable history is the existence of the archdiocese, its headquarters in Colombo and the Cathedral of Saint Lucia. Marian veneration belongs to the Catholic life of the community. The constructive dates, the alleged patronage and the basilica elevation that the previous version attributed without support to the wrong building are withdrawn.
Location
The marker points out Colombo as a representative urban location of this ecclesial presence. It is not intended to identify an exclusive sanctuary of the Immaculate.
