Origin and history

About Our Lady of the Merced del Puerto Claro vinculada al actual Valparaíso (Chile)the available sources are fragmented and do not always match in the ancient toponymy "Puerto Claro." The historical documentation of the area shows the presence of the merchant in Valparaíso already in 1591, in the sector today known as Portales, according to reviews of the local merchant community. This presence is linked to the port and the spiritual care of the coastal population, but there is no clear identification, in the sources consulted, of a specific advocation formalized as "Our Lady of the Merced del Puerto Claro" with its own canonical title; rather, it is generally spoken of Our Lady of the Mercedes / de la Merced en Valparaíso.

From a strictly documentedthe city of Valparaíso (Chile) received an early evangelizing and merchant presence, with chapels and churches under the title of the Merced, integrated into the life of the port and related to the protection of sailors and inhabitants. However, no specific fact sheet has been found in official or academic ecclesial sources that recognizes, with historical and legal precision, "Our Lady of the Merced del Puerto Claro" as its own title different from the usual commercial advocation of the city. In the general repertories on the Virgin of the Merced we mention Valparaíso as a city under his patronage, but without specifying the epitet "del Puerto Claro."

In the plan of the tradition / legend, various local accounts (of a divulgative or devotional type, not always critical) mention the protection of the Virgin of the Merced over the port in times of storms, attacks or disasters, presenting it as Mother and Lady of the sea and of the navigators. These stories, which speak of an image "of the Port Claro" or linked to the "clear port" as the old name of the place, do not record as verified in official documentation and should be considered as a pious tradition, without solid historiographic support. In the available sources there is also no reference to a Marian sanctuary of this advocation in Valparaiso, department of Valparaiso, Colombia; the location data in Colombia does not match the historical and devotional information, which is consistent with the Valparaiso chileno. In the face of this geographical discrepancy, it should be noted that there is no official advocation, based on verified sources, known as "Nuestra Señora de la Merced del Puerto Claro" in Valparaíso (Colombia).

The image and the sanctuary

In accessible sources there is no detailed, safe and specific description of an image titled exactly "Our Lady of the Market of the Port Claro." What does appear clearly is the arraigo of merchant images in Valparaíso (Chile), generally of a type Virgin of the Merced with a merchant white habit and mantle, bearing the Child Jesus and sometimes with broken chains or shackles, symbols characteristic of the Order of the Market and of the redemption of captives. However, no data can be found to distinguish a specific image, with its own iconographic features, under the title "del Puerto Claro." Therefore, on the type of size, material, author or precise date of that image, no consta documented information.

Concerning sanctuary or temple, the Mercedary presence in Valparaíso (Chile) is linked to the historical Church of the Mercedwhose development dates back to successive temples, until reaching the fifth church started in 1887, designed and built with the frontis towards Victoria Street. This temple is set up as an important shopping center, but the sources consulted simply present it as Church of the Merced or a merchant parish, not as "Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Merced of the Port of Claro," nor as a minor basilica, nor as a national sanctuary; therefore, at the legal-liturgical level, no consta that the temple where this advocation is venerated has an official title of national sanctuary or minor basilica. Nor has reference been found in diocesan or official sources to a self-named sanctuary in Valparaiso (Colombia).

Sponsorship and coronation

In the lists of patronings of the Virgin of the Merced, mention is made of Valparaíso among the cities that have her as a patron. However, sources do not specify whether the civilian city, de la diocese / archdiocesenor do they use the full title "Our Lady of the Clear Port Market." In the documentation consulted, no explicit decree has been found that the name "patron of the archdiocese of Valparaiso" with this particular title; therefore, from a strictly verifiable point of view, it can only be said that Valparaiso has a strong tradition of commercial patronagebut there is no official text that unequivocally confirms the legal-canonical title of "patron of the archdiocese" under the name "of the Claro Port."

About a possible canonical coronation of the image of Our Lady of the Merced in Valparaíso (under any of its titles), the sources consulted (local merchant history, Marian repertories, diocesan or general notes) do not contain a formal act of canonical coronation with pontifical decree or papal delegation. Accordingly, according to the available data, it should be indicated: "does not contain a documented canonical coronation" for the title "Our Lady of the Merced del Puerto Claro."
