Origin and history

La advocación de Our Lady of the Nativity of Chilla, also known as Virgin of Chilla, has its main center of worship in the Basilica Our Lady of the Nativity of Chilla, in canton Chilla, province of El Oro, Ecuador. Chilla is located in the Andes mountain range, more than 2,800 meters high, and has become an important destination for Marian pilgrimage in the south of the country.

According to tradition or legend, some peasants from the Old Town, a former settlement of the village of Chilla, they found an image of the Virgin in a swamp or swamp area, where today the building of the Municipal Government rises. The peasants moved the effigy to the house, but the image was mysteriously returning to the place of the swamp; after repeated this fact, the villagers interpreted that there should be the new settlement and the sanctuary. From this experience comes the name of the canton: “Chilla”, derived from quichua “Chaylla”which means "there it is," in allusion to the place where "the Virgin was."

As for the documented historythe sources point out that the devotion to the Virgin of the Nativity of Chilla goes back to 18th century, which makes it one of the oldest Marian asvocations in southern Ecuador. The currently venerated image is described as a sculpture of 19th century. At the ecclesial and legal level, an important milestone was the St. Paul VI's Bible of November 10, 1970by which the Virgin of the Nativity of Chilla was declared Patroness of the province of El Oro. There are no official dates of pontifical recognition in the sources consulted.

> Note: Although the consultation mentioned "Colombia," the official and journalistic sources place the sanctuary unanimously in Chilla, province of El Oro, Ecuador.

The media and devotional language usually call it “Marian shrine of Chilla”. Although it is called "Basilica" in common use and in the local name itself, the sources consulted do not provide an explicit data of a pontifical decree of elevation to minor basilicaThis point cannot therefore be said with rigour.

Where is he?

The main cult center of Our Lady of the Nativity of Chilla is located in Chilla, province of El Oro, Ecuador. The mapping of OpenStreetMap identifies the building as "Our Lady of Nativity Catholic Basilica Sanctuary," in the Old People's sector. On the map of this page, this specific building has been chosen and not simply the administrative center of the canton.

What was documented and transmitted

An institutional source of tourist information from Machala describes the basilica as a temple of veneration to the Virgin of Nativity and as a place of arrival of faithful from El Oro, Ecuador and other countries. It also places the church in the center of Chilla and describes the annual celebration of September. The National Institute of Cultural Heritage records the feast of the Virgin of the Nativity of Chilla on September 8 and a pilgrimage to the sanctuary between August 6 and 10. These data document the pilgrim veneration and practice; they are not in themselves a test of each extraordinary account attributed to the image.

Local tradition tells that some peasants found the image in a swamp area of Pueblo Viejo and that, after moving it, the image returned to the place of origin. The account symbolically explains the memory of the sanctuary and the population, but here it is presented as a tradition transmitted, not as a historical fact proven by a contemporary act. Nor is the bombing protection episode in the research material incorporated as a proven fact: a sufficient primary document has not been located in this check to certify it.

Party, pilgrimage and building

The institutional source consulted describes the celebrations from 1 to 8 September, with mass, procession, penance, thanks and cultural activities. The property record confirms the presence of the party in the cultural calendar of El Oro. The building retains devotional and artistic elements described by the same source, including the throne of the image, canvas and an old pulpit. The flow published by the source is an estimate of the attendance of this particular celebration and does not become a permanent census here.

Ecclesial State and criterion of this document

It consists of a Catholic sanctuary and a living Marian devotion. The sources consulted for this extension do not contain a decree declaring a supernatural apparition of Chilla or a formal resolution on extraordinary accounts. This is why an approved apparition label is not assigned: the distinction between documented veneration, local tradition and facts requiring a specific source is retained.
