Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Peña (Anies)
The shrine hung from the rock · Huesca
Hanged on the void, on the southern side of the Sierra Caballera and near the castle of Loarre, the rupestre sanctuary of the Virgin of the Peña de Aniés is one of the most spectacular Marian enclaves of the Oscense Prepirineus.
Origin and history
The present set is a rock shrine around a medieval church of the 13th century, with continuous reforms, built "on the rock" on the southern side of the Sierra Caballera. It was a place of withdrawal of anacorets, with their House of Ermitage; their exact origin is uncertain.
The local tradition tells that the image was found in a concave of the rock and that, miraculously returned to the hole of the rock, it was interpreted as the will of the Virgin to be venerated there. It is a local pilgrimage sanctuary, with a busy Romeria on the first Sunday of May and a penitential rise of a strong sense of emptiness.
Canonical patronage and coronation: not recorded in the sources.
