Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Rock
Patron of Calatayud (Zaragoza)
On the old castle of the Peña, in a promontory of the fortified Islamic compound of Calatayud, the sanctuary of Our Lady of the Peña, patron, queen and mother of the city is raised.
Origin and history
The tradition places in 1120, after the entrance of Alfonso I the Battler in Calatayud, the prodigious finding of an ancient image of the Virgin on the mountain, called "de la Peña" by the place; a serene size of brown complexion, found - according to the story - in the hole of a bell. It's legendary narration.
Documentately, the parish of the Peña existed before 1180, on the Altozano; the sanctuary was raised on the old castle of the Peña, preserving its Mudejar and military character, with reforms of the 19th century. It is a parish church and Marian sanctuary, well-catalogued of the Aragonese Cultural Heritage (2002). Every year, in the early days of September, the people go up in thanksgiving.
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
