Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Rock of France
The brunette Virgin of the saltina saw
At the top of the Peña de France, more than 1,700 metres away, the Dominicans raised one of the great Marian shrines of Castile, from which devotion spread to America and the Philippines.

Origin and history
The tradition places in the 15th century the finding of the image at the summit of the Peña de France. The Dominican friars settled there and built the sanctuary, which soon became an important pilgrimage center of the Crown of Castile.
The devotion was widely spread thanks to the missionary work of the Dominicans, who took the cult of the Virgin of Peña from France to America and the Philippines (where it was venerated as "Peñafrancia"). In 1966, Pope Paul VI declared her patron of the province of Salamanca; the whole of the sanctuary has been Good of Cultural Interest since 1956.
