Patrona de Puebla de Guzmán (Huelva)

In the Cerro del Águila, on Puebla de Guzmán, the shrine of the Virgin of the Peña welcomes the patron of the village, famous for its Andean rostery with swords dance and for its "food of the poor."

Origin and history

The tradition places the origin of devotion in the 15th century, with the miraculous finding of the image by a pastor, Alonso Gómez, who would have been commissioned to lift a hermitage. The image is made of polychrome oak wood, from the mid-16th century, with documentary references dating back to 1536.

The sanctuary, at the Cerro del Aguila, about four kilometres from the village, is a diocesan sanctuary. The Virgin was confirmed as a patron of Puebla de Guzmán and canonically crowned on 4 July 2009. His Romeria on the last Sunday of April stands out for unique features such as the swords dance on the processional exits and the traditional "food of the poor."
