Origin and history

Mount da Penha is the highest point of Guimarães and was of landscape importance before becoming a sanctuary. The local tradition in the 18th century places a first chapel on the mountain; in 1872 the statutes of the Brotherhood of Nossa Senhora do Carmo da Penha are approved, which already documents an organized Marian fellowship.

At the end of the 19th century the mountain gained religious relevance, with a statue of Pius IX on the top (1893). The present sanctuary is a work of the 20th century, of modern and sober language, attributed to the architect José Marques da Silva, raised around 1930- 1947. In 1989 the cable opened from Guimarães, which consolidated the mountain as a place of pilgrimage and meeting. The great rosemary is held on the second Sunday of September.

"Our Lady of Penha, lighthouse of Guimarães, pray for us."
