Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Rocha
La ermita sobre el mar · Porches (Algarve)
On a rocky promontory that enters the sea, on the coast of Porches, the small hermitage of Nossa Senhora da Rocha is one of the most beautiful Marian corners of the Algarve, raised by the devotion of the fishermen.

Origin and history
The documentation places the current chapel in the 16th century, attributed to the initiative of the fishermen in honor of the Virgin. A heritage sheet points out that the place of worship could have a more ancient background, perhaps from Islamic times or with reused elements, although this is formulated as an archaeological hypothesis. At the end of the 16th century the space was surrounded by a fortified structure with pits.
The set stands out for its scenic and defensive location: on an Atlantic cliff, with associated strength and dominant view on the coast. The devotion is that of the people of the sea, who in this high place and exposed to the ocean are entrusted to the Virgin with the Child to be venerated inside.
