Origin and history
La Mission Our Lady of Soledad is one of the 21 Franciscan missions of Alta California, founded the 9 October 1791 in the valley of the Salinas River, as an extension of the evangelizing work initiated by Saint Junipero Serra. The choice of the Marian title responds to the devotion already rooted in the Hispanic world to the Virgin of the Soledad, one of the advocates of the Dolored who contemplate Mary in the solitude of the Holy Saturday, coming from Spanish spirituality. The foundation was carried out under the patronage of the Spanish Crown and the Franciscan military system, in territory then belonging to the Virreinate of New Spain.
From the point of view documented historythe sources agree that the mission was established by the Franciscans as "Mission Our Lady of Solitude"in order to evangelize the indigenous peoples of the area (particularly ohlone / costanian groups), develop agriculture and serve as an intermediate point among other missions of the Royal Way. The original temple and the military buildings suffered severe flood damage in the 19th centuryfollowed by the progressive abandonment after the secularization of the missions in the 1830s-1840; the whole fell into ruins until the 20th century, when they began reconstruction and restoration projects.
As regards tradition and local memory, various dissemination materials highlight the character of the mission as a place of recollection and a certain "geographical solitude," which would have been symbolically aligned with the title of Our Lady of Soledad; however, this relationship is of a spiritual and literary type; and is not included in the original foundational documentation as an explicit reason for the advocation, beyond the usual dissemination of this Marian title in the Hispanic sphere of the time. There are no apparitions or supernatural events associated with a miraculous origin of the advocation in this place: it is a mission dedication to an advocation already known to the Virgin Mary.

In the interior a sober environment is preserved, oriented both to the liturgical celebration as to the memory of Franciscan missionary work.
