Marian devotion
Our Lady of Victory
Patrona de Málaga
The devotion to the Virgin of Victoria is linked to the very history of Malaga: it was born with the incorporation of the city to the Crown of Castile in 1487 and since then it is venerated as its patron.
Origin and history
The tradition links devotion to Our Lady of Victory with the taking of Malaga by the Catholic Kings in 1487, in the final phase of the Reconquest. A Marian image linked to the royal camp was associated with the victory obtained - hence the title - and, after the incorporation of the city, was taken as a sign of the Virgin's protection over Malaga.
Over the centuries devotion was consolidated until the Virgin of Victoria was recognized as the patron of the city. The Sanctuary of Victory was raised and enriched as the center of its cult, very alive in the popular Maltese religiosity, especially around its September 8 party.
