As for the documented history, devotion to the Virgin of the Mercedes is linked to the expansion of the Order of the Merced and of the merchant cult in Peru. The Wikipedia in Spanish, in dealing with the Virgin of the Merced in general, mentions Paita as one of the places where this advocation has received titles of special relevance, including that of "Life mayor of the city of Paita"recognition granted in 2010 by local authorities. Several local sources point out that the image has been venerated "for more than five centuries" in the port of Paita, although critical documentation is not available to enable the exact date of arrival of the image to be fixed. The Archdiocese of Piura officially recognizes Our Lady of the Mercedes of Paita as one of the main Marian devotions of the region and as Patroness of the Archdiocese.
The image and the sanctuary
The image of Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita is a Marian representation of type Virgin of the Merced, standing, richly dressed, with mantle and crown, following the traditional iconography of this advocation in the Spanish-American sphere. It is known affectionately in the region as “Mechita”. It has recently been subject to a comprehensive review and maintenance by a professional restorer, which ensures its conservation and enhances its religious and historical value. There are no precise technical data on the original material (polychrome wood or other support) in the sources consulted, so the reserve is maintained at this point: is not certain the material of the size.
The image is venerated in the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita, located on the hill known as "Tres Cruces," in the province of Paita, department of Piura. This is one of the Marian shrines most visited in Peruwith a large influx of pilgrims especially in September. A local devotional review calls it "the basilica" and notes that the present temple was built about four decades ago, using a modern structure of "light shells" of concrete, which gives it a characteristic silhouette on the hill. However, the information available does not contain a pontifical decree granting it the title of minor basilicatherefore, from a canonical point of view, it is not known that the temple has the official title of a minor basilica or national sanctuary; it is venerated as a Marian sanctuary of regional and archdiocesan importance..
Sponsorship and coronation
Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita is recognized as Patroness of the port and the province of Paitaand Patron of the Archdiocese of Piuraaccording to the information of the archbishopric himself. In addition, the commercial advocation is traditionally Patron of the Armed and Police Forces of Peru, although this patronage refers to the Virgin of the Merced in general, not exclusively to the image of Paita. On the civil level, Wikipedia itself indicates that the Virgin of Mercedes has been declared "Life mayor of the city of Paita"the distinction agreed in 2010 by the municipal authorities.
As for a canonical coronation, the sources consulted (Wikipedia, Archdiocese of Piura, devotional pages and local press) do not provide a clear and reliable data about the year, the pontiff or the pontifical delegate responsible for a possible coronation of this particular image. Therefore, following the criterion of historical and canonical rigour, it should be indicated: does not contain a documented canonical coronation for the image of Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita.
Party and devotion
The main feast of Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita is held September 24, in line with the liturgy of the advocation of the Virgin of the Merced. On that date, Paita lives one of the country's most important employers' celebrations, with pilgrimages from various parts of Peru to the shrine of Mount Three Cruces, which makes it one of the most popular Marian centers at national level. During the holidays, liturgical acts (solemn Eucharist, novena, processions) are combined with popular expressions of faith, music and local tradition.
Devotion has a strong component of trust in the protection of the Virgin to the dangers of the sea, diseases and social difficulties. The harbour character of Paita and the memory of a "saved" image of a pirate attack have strengthened the perception of Our Lady of the Mercedes as protection of fishermen and those living from the seaAlthough this specific patronage does not appear in official documents, but rather in the popular sense and daily devotion of the coastal population. Relevant local institutions, such as the Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita Hospitalthey are placed under their patronage, a sign of the presence of this advocation in the social and health life of the province.
Link to the Rosary
In the sources consulted there is no specific and documented relationship between the advocation of Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita and some unique practice of prayer of the Rosary (for example, a rosarian brotherhood of its own or a "ninth of the Rosary" characteristic of the sanctuary). It should therefore be clearly noted: there is no particular link with the Rosary other than that which is common in Marian piety.
However, in the context of Catholic spirituality, the Rosary occupies a central place in the life of the Marian shrines, and everything indicates that in Paita also the prayer of the Rosary is part of the Novies, processions and vigil in honor of Our Lady of the Mercedes. The Rosary allows us to contemplate, together with Mary, the mysteries of Christ's life and to offer, one by one, the specific realities of the people of Haiti: the work of the fishermen, the families, the sick and the needs of the region. So, even if there is no "own" and differentiated rosarian tradition, it can be said that the Rosario is a privileged way to live and deepen devotion to Our Lady of the Mercedes de Paita, in line with the Marian practice of the universal Church.
