En 1979Bob O'Bill, an electrician from Butte's copper mines, made a promise to the Virgin Mary when his wife was seriously ill with cancer. If he recovered, he would lift a statue of the Virgin about a half a foot in the courtyard of his house. The wife completely healed and O'Bill decided to keep the vote.
The personal initiative quickly became a community project: neighbors, former miners and volunteers joined together to raise a much larger statue, visible from the city, on the top of the mountain on the Continental Divide. The image, built in steel sections, was raised by parts; the last piece, the head of the Virgin, was placed on December 17, 1985, date which is usually considered the culmination of the monument. Since then, Our Lady of the Rocky has become a visual and spiritual reference for Butte and one of the best known Marian monuments in the United States.
# # Tradition and elements of legend
Various devotional accounts point out that, during the construction, they occurred "a long series of miracles" or providential interventions, especially related to the financing, safety of workers and the coordination of very limited technical means for such a large work. These testimonies come mainly from the protagonists collected in videos and news chronicles and are part of the tradición oral associated with the sanctuary. Although they are widespread in popular piety, they do not show as miracles canonized by a formal ecclesiastical process.
The image and the sanctuary
The image of Our Lady of the Rocky is a large statue of steelwhite, approximately 27-30 meters high (about 90 feet) and between 16 and more than 60 tonnes according to different journalistic estimates. It simply represents the Virgin Mary standing, con manto y túnicathe arms extended to the city in a gesture of reception and protection, without a very elaborate iconography, which reinforces its character as a universal tribute to motherhood. Located more than a thousand meters above the valley, it rises over the continental division line of the Rocky Mountains and illuminates at night, being visible from miles away.
At the foot of the statue, a small devotional and tourist complex has been developed, with facilities for the reception of visitors and pilgrims, usually accessible by bus guided tours from Butte. The statue and the environment are simply known as Our Lady of the Rockies and are managed by a local non-profit organization; it is not clear that the place has been canonically erected as minor basilica or National sanctuaryand no official title is mentioned as "diocesan sanctuary" in easily accessible documentation. It is therefore a place of Marian and Memorial devotion with strong Catholic roots, also open to the visit of people of other denominations or without religious affiliation.
Sponsorship and coronation
Our Lady of the Rockies is dedicated to all women and, in particular, to all mothersthe institutional and tourist descriptions of the monument are highlighted. It does not contain a formal decree of canonical patronage to establish it as a patron of the city of Butte, the diocese or the state of Montaña; rather, its patronage is understood in a broad and affective way, as a sign of protection over the city and a tribute to the motherhood and sacrifice of women, including the wives and mothers of miners.
In the documentation consulted does not contain a documented canonical coronation of the image (neither by pontifical mandate nor by episcopal delegate), nor by a liturgical coronation officially recognized by the Holy See. None of the main sources (Catholic press, Marian chronicles or local information) mention canonical coronation rite.
Party and devotion
The sources do not indicate a Fecha liturgica propia for Our Lady of the Rocky; devotion is integrated into the general Marian calendar and is based above all on the visit to the place, rather than on a specific patronal celebration. There is therefore no official liturgical memory with diocesan or higher rank.

– Prayer for mothers, families and the sick, in continuity with the foundational history linked to the disease and healing of Bob O'Bill's wife.
The flow data vary according to the tourist seasons; the visitor reviews highlight the spiritual character of the place, the panoramic view and the witness of faith of the community that made the statue possible. No consolidated official figures of annual pilgrims are available in the sources consulted.
Link to the Rosary
The available chronicles about Our Lady of the Rocky are focused on the personal promise, healing, the construction of the statue and the tribute to the mothers; there is no explicit mention of a of the Rosary nor an organized practice of the Rosary as a defining element of this sanctuary. Consequently, there is no specific and documented link with the Rosary prayer (for example, particular indulgences, rosarian copradies or parties explicitly linked to the Virgin of the Rosary).
However, since the advocation is clearly part of the Latin Catholic Marian tradition and that many pilgrims come to give thanks, to ask for health and to entrust their families, it is reasonable that the Rosary the piety of those who go up to the mountain: the Rosary allows meditating on the mysteries of Christ's life with Maryto present their own needs and, in this particular case, to pray for the mothers, the sick and the city of Butte in the shadow of the great white image that dominates the Rocky Mountains. This contemplative and pleading dimension deeply harmonizes with the origin of the advocation, born of a confident supplication and gratitude for a received favor.
