Main data
Origin and history
La Mare de Déu de les Peces (Our Lady of the Fish) is a Marian advocation of character local y rural, venerated in the small chapel of Arans, in the parish of Ordino (Principality of Andorra). It is not mentioned in the general repertories of large sanctuaries or in regular lists of international Marian advocacy, which confirms its strictly communal and popular roots.
Documented history: The chapel of Arans is among the many small rural hermitage of Andorra, several of them documented since at least the 18th century, dedicated to the Virgin or to saints very linked to the daily life of the valley (agriculture, livestock, roads, climate). For the concrete title of "Mare de Déu de les Fish" in Arans do not contain, in accessible sources, precise dates of erection, consecration or documented reforms, no explicit mention in diocesan or state sources on-line, only refers to the existence of a Marian "rural capella" in the village environment, with an image of popular devotion of the valley. It can therefore be stated only that the chapel is documented at least since modern times (18th century) as a place of local Marian devotionwithout more chronological accuracy.
Tradition / legend: The term "fish" (fish) suggests, by analogy with other European rural claims, a possible legendary relationship with a prodigy linked to the world of water or subsistence (fishing, food supply, river protection or mountain torrents). However, does not contain in the consulting sources a formally collected legend or a concrete miraculous account (miraculous fishing, finding the image in the water, etc.). Any etymological or pious explanation of this title therefore enters the field of conjecture, and should be clearly noted that there is no traditional written account that can be strictly cited.
The image and the sanctuary
The venerated image in the Arans chapel is described in local sources as a "simple Marian image of popular devotion of the valley", characteristic of the Andorran rural environment. A detailed art sheet (author, school, precise style), and a complete technical description (polychrome wood, stone size, clothing image, etc.) are not available in the documentation. According to the usual typology of the rural Marian images of the Pyrenees in the 17th-18th centuries, it is likely that the a small size, popular style, designed for the near veneration of the faithfulbut since no verifiable data on specific material or iconography, the gesture, attributes and possible presence of the Child Jesus cannot be accurately described.
The temple where it is venerated is named after Arans chapel, una ermita rural dependent on the parish of Order (Andorra). It is not recognized as a minor basilica, or as a national or diocesan sanctuary in known official lists; these are a local oratory, intended mainly for the veneration of the community of the people and for specific celebrations of the liturgical calendar. It is in the tradition of the Pirenaic mountain chapels: building with small dimensions, simple lines, no large monumental additions or complex decorative programs, adapted for modest but constant use throughout the year.
Sponsorship and coronation
In relation to the patronazgothe Mare de Déu de les Fish has been proclaimed. official employer of Andorra, of the diocese, and of the parish of Ordino as a whole. Their patronage must therefore be understood in the sense of devocional y localas a protector of the people of Arans and their immediate environment, without formal canonical title recognized at national or diocesan level.
As regards a possible canonical coronation, does not contain a documented canonical coronation for this advocation. There are no references to the Holy See decree, or to pontifical delegates or official coronation ceremonies in accessible documentation. The veneration therefore remains within the framework of a simple devotion, without the legal distinctions of great coronated images.
Party and devotion
On the date of the main partythe available sources do not collect a specific holiday at the diocesan or national level dedicated to the Mare de Déu de les Fish. It is likely - by analogy with other Marian rural chapels of Andorra - that the local celebration will be recorded around:
– alguna fiesta mariana general (por ejemplo, la Natividad de la Virgen, la Inmaculada o alguna solemnidad mariana del calendario romano), o – una fecha tradicional propia de la comunidad de Arans,
but, since no consém una crea documentado con seguridadcannot be fixed on this sheet on a specific day.
On the devotion and popular practices, the cult is characterized by being eminentemente local, vinculado a:
– la participación de los vecinos de Arans y del valle de Ordino en misas y oraciones en la capilla, – la conservación de la imagen como signo de protección sobre el pueblo y sus tareas cotidianas (especialmente en un contexto de montaña, con dependencia del clima y de los recursos naturales), – y la visita esporádica de fieles que recorren las distintas ermitas marianas de la zona, en itinerarios devocionales propios de los Pirineos.
There are no figures of influx or mention of large organized pilgrimages of national or international scope; devotion maintains the profile of a simple, close and neighboring cult.
Link to the Rosary
A specific and documented relationship between the Mare de Déu de les Fish and the prayer of the Rosary (for example, co-fradies of the Rosary canonically erected in the chapel, particular indulgences, or parties of the Virgin of the Rosary associated with this image). Therefore, there is no concrete historical link with the Rosary beyond general Marian devotion.
However, in Catholic spirituality, every authentic Marian advocation is naturally integrated into the itinerary of the Rosarywhich is a contemplation of the mysteries of Christ's life with the eyes and heart of Mary. In a rural context like Arans:
– el Rosario puede acompañar la vida cotidiana de las familias del valle, – las oraciones meditadas ante la imagen de la Mare de Déu de les Peces ayudan a poner bajo la protección de la Virgen las necesidades materiales (trabajo, clima, recursos) y espirituales (fe, paz, reconciliación) de la comunidad, – y la repetición del “Dios te salve, María” enlaza la devoción local con la gran tradición mariana de la Iglesia universal, donde each small hermitage and each simple image participate in the same mystery of Mary, Mother of God and Mother of the Church.
In this way, even without a documented rosarian tradition, the Mare de Déu de les Fish can be seen as a near maternal presence who encourages the faithful to live the Rosary as a school of faith, trust and neglect in the providence of God, also in the humble and concrete realities of a small mountain people.
