Our Lady Queen of Peace - Ankawa Cathedral (Erbil)

The Cathedral of the Queen of Peace, in the Christian district of Ankawa (Erbil, Iraqi Kurdistan), is the seat of the Syrian-Catholic Eparchia of Adiabene, erected on June 28, 2019 with the consent of Pope Francis. The new constituency was born to accompany the Syrian-Catholic families displaced from the Nineveh plain following the 2014 Islamic State offensive, which they found refuge in Ankawa.

🌹 Wonders and anecdotes

  • It is the seat of the Syrian-Catholic Eparchia of Adiabene, erected on 28 June 2019, torn from the Archieparchia of Mosul and with jurisdiction over Erbil, Dohuk and Suleimaniya.
  • His raison d'être is in the exodus of 2014: thousands of Christian families fled the Nineveh plain to the Islamic State and settled in Ankawa, where the Church raised new temples to host them.
  • Ankawa is one of the largest Christian nuclei in Iraq, home to the faithful Chaldeans, Syriacs and Assyrians, with churches dating back to the first centuries, such as that of San Jorge (Mar Gewargis).
  • The name "Adiabene" evokes the ancient kingdom of Syriac Christian root centered on Erbil.
