Origin and history

Documented history

The Marian sanctuary known as The Grotto – National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother was founded by the Servants of Mary (Servites), a congregation particularly linked to devotion to the Blessed Virgin. The official history of the sanctuary indicates that it was born as the work of the Marian apostolate of this Order in the city of Portland, in the state of Oregon, where they acquired a wooded land with a rocky cliff to raise there a place of prayer and pilgrimage dedicated to the Mother Dolorosa.

The sanctuary is recognized as National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother (National Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Dolores), which underlines its importance in the north-west of the United States as a centre of Marian devotion and pilgrimages. Throughout the 20th century the whole was developed: the great grotto excavated in the rock, the upper church, the gardens, devotional paths and various oratoriums dedicated to the Virgin under different vocations.

Tradition / Devotional elements

In addition to historical data, the local tradition presents the sanctuary as a place of spiritual comfort for those who suffer, in the image of Seven Dolores of Marywhich constitute the spiritual core of the Order of the Servants of Mary. The perception of this enclave as "refuge" in the midst of nature soon became entrenched, where the faithful can join the Virgin in their pains at the foot of the Cross, applying to their own life the mystery of Mary's compassion.

(They do not contain, in the usual sources, accounts of Marian apparitions linked to this place; the advocation is based on the servite spirituality and the iconography of the Virgin Dolorosa.)

The image and the sanctuary

The main image

In the grotto that gives name to the sanctuary is venerated a reproduction of the Piety of Miguel Ángel, placed inside a large cave excavated in the rock from the cliff. The image represents the Virgin Mary holding the dead body of Christ descended from the Cross, classical iconography of the Mercy, closely linked to devotion to Our Lady of the Dolores.

The piece is a sculptural replica (the exact type of stone or material is not recorded in the general sources), located at the bottom of the grotto, framed by the natural arc of rock and by an open-air prayer space with altar for multiple liturgical celebrations.

The sanctuary

The official name of the set is “The Grotto – National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother”, located on a wooded terrain with a cliff in the city of Portland, Oregon, United States. The sanctuary includes:

– La large grotto al pie del acantilado, con la Piedad. – Una upper church (capilla/templo) en la parte alta del terreno, accesible por ascensor o caminos, utilizada para la Eucaristía y otras celebraciones. – Amplios jardines y senderos with various Marian images and prayer stations, which make the place an environment of recollection in the middle of nature.

The secular and ecclesial sources describe it as one of the the main Marian shrines in the north-west of the United StatesPastoral guidance by the Servants of Mary. It is not known that the main church has been elevated to the title of minor basilicaHowever, the title of "National Sanctuary".

Sponsorship and coronation

The official title of the place is “National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother”, which indicates recognition as a Marian sanctuary of relevance National in the United States. Party and devotion

La main party of this advocation in the sanctuary is the liturgical memory of Our Lady of Sorrows, el 15 September, according to the calendar of the Latin Roman rite. That day the sufferings of the Virgin Mary associated with the Passion of Christ are celebrated in the universal Church; for the Servants of Mary and for this sanctuary it has a particularly solemn character.

The Grotto is a place of pilgrimage throughout the year, with a significant influx of faithful from the north-west of the United States and elsewhere. In addition to the Marian celebrations, the sanctuary is known for devotional activities, retreats, outdoor celebrations in the explanade in front of the grotto and special events in strong times of the liturgical year (Advent, Christmas, Holy Week), always with the presence of the Virgin Dolorosa as a spiritual reference.

Among the features of devotion are:

– La meditación de los Dolores de María (especialmente los Siete Dolores) según la tradición servita. – La búsqueda de comfort and hope en los sufrimientos personales, contemplando a María al pie de la Cruz. – El uso del santuario como espacio de silence, prayer and reconciliationunited to the sacrament of Penance and the Eucharist.

No recent and verifiable official annual flow figures have been found, and in precise numerical data.

Link to the Rosary

En la información disponible sobre The Grotto – National Sanctuary of Our Sorrowful Mother does not contain an exclusive or unique practice of the Rosary which distinguishes this sanctuary from other Marian centers, beyond the usual in Catholic devotional life.

However, the identity of the place, focused on the Dolores de María and in the contemplation of Mercy, deeply harmonizes with the spirituality of Rosarywhich is at the same time Christological and Marian. The painful mysteries of the Rosary allow us to contemplate, together with Christ, the suffering of the Mother: the agony in Gethsemane, the flogging, the coronation of thorns, the way of Calvary and the Crucifixion, where the scene of the Piety is located.

In this context, the prayer of the Rosary:

– Ayuda a uniting the pain itself a la Pasión de Cristo, en comunión con la Virgen Dolorosa. – Favorece una lectura contemplativa of Mary's sufferings, in continuity with devotion to the Seven Dolores que caracteriza a los Siervos de María. – Se convierte en un medio privilegiado para vivir en clave mariana la experiencia de comfort and hope which offers this sanctuary.

Thus, even if there is no specific rosarian practice in the sources, the Rosary is presented as a natural and fruitful way to accompany the devotion to Our Lady of the Portland Dolores en The Grotto.
