Our Lady of the Great Eyes
Patron saint of Lugo
In the cathedral of Lugo, in its baroque chapel of the girola, we sell Our Lady of the Big Eyes, patron of the city: a Gothic image of the Virgin of Milk, with an immense and maternal look.
Origin and history
The Marian cult in the cathedral of Lugo is very old: as early as the 12th century there is a record of the continued enlightenment of the Most Holy and of a stable devotion to St. Mary. The current image is a Gothic sculpture of the late 14th century, of the type Virgin of Milk, which shows the Mother after breastfeeding the Child, surrounded by cherubim.
The image presides over the Marian program of the Gothic girola; its current chapel is a baroque body added to the header in the 18th century by Fernando de Casas and Novoa, author of the façade of the Obradoiro de Santiago. The cult grew markedly in the Modern Age, with lamps and exvotes, and culminated in the canonical coronation of August 15, 1904.
