Marian devotion
Our Lady of the Remedies of Cholula
On the Great Pyramid · Puebla (Mexico)
Coronating the largest pyramid of Mesoamerica, the Remedian shrine of Cholula unites heaven and earth: every September, thousands of pilgrims go up to the hill to honor the Virgin.
Origin and history
After the conquest, the Spaniards erected on the top of the great pre-Hispanic pyramid of Cholula - then already covered by vegetation, with the appearance of a hill - a hermitage dedicated to Our Lady of Remedies. The site, visible from the whole plain and next to the volcanoes, made the sanctuary one of the most recognizable Marian places in Mexico.
Devotion was deeply rooted among the population, mixing the Christian faith with the heritage of the Cholultec people. The main celebrations are concentrated around the 8 of September: the rise to the sanctuary and the mornings begin on 31 August, and for several days the explanade is filled with pilgrims, dances and offerings to the Virgin.
