Marian worship
Our Lady of Remedies (Mondoñedo)
Patron saint of Mondoñedo (Lugo)
At the entrance to Mondoñedo, in the Alameda dos Remedios, a baroque sanctuary houses Our Lady of Remedies, patron saint of the town and spiritual and civic reference of the episcopal city.
Origin and history
The original Hermitage of Los Remedios was endowed in 1558 by Bishop Fray Francisco de Santa María Benavides, who also promoted a pilgrims' hostel; it soon became a center of Marian devotion. The current sanctuary is a Baroque church built between 1733 and 1738, with a Latin cross floor plan, a dome over the crossing, and a façade with two towers.
Inside, it preserves the most remarkable Baroque collection of altarpieces in Mondoñedo; the main altarpiece houses the venerated image of Our Lady of Remedies. Established as an independent parish in 1895, it is the patron saint of the town, the setting for the popular Romería dos Remedios pilgrimage.
Canonical coronation: not recorded.
